Chapter 15

What happens next?
Disaster
Emily’s voice cracked as she shouted—more from panic than anger. “Get out!”
The boy stumbled back, hands raised, eyes wide, hoodie still clinging to his arms as if he couldn’t remember how to move. He looked like a deer in headlights—terrified, stunned, confused.
But it was too late.
The loud crack of her voice, followed by the soft thud of retreating footsteps, had already drawn attention.
From the end of the aisle, a stern voice rang out. “Ma’am? Is everything okay?”
Emily whirled around.
A librarian stood there—middle-aged, short-haired, sharp-eyed. And behind her… another staff member, already pulling out a phone.
The boy froze in place.
Emily's heart sank. “It’s not—no, it’s not what it looks like.”
The librarian took a slow step forward. She saw the torn blouse, the way it hung askew off Emily’s shoulder, the book clutched tight to her chest. Then her eyes flicked to the boy—tall, awkward, frozen—and narrowed.
“You!” she snapped. “Did you touch her?”
“No!” he gasped. “I—I just—”
“She was shouting,” the second librarian added. “I heard it. Call the police.”
Emily’s stomach dropped. “Wait, no. Please—he didn’t do anything. It was an accident.”
But they weren’t listening. The woman stepped between them now, shielding her like Emily had just survived an ****. The boy took a step back, shaking his head furiously, but the second librarian was already talking into the phone.
“Yes, public library. Possible ****. Yes, we have the suspect. White male, eighteen, hoodie, glasses…”
Emily opened her mouth—tried again. “Please. He didn’t touch me. My shirt caught on a shelf, it ripped, he just heard the sound and came to look. He didn’t do anything.”
The librarian looked at her, incredulous. “You’re defending him?”
“I’m explaining,” Emily said, louder this time. “It wasn’t like that.”
But the die was cast.

Ten minutes later, police arrived. Two officers, one male, one female. The boy had been pulled aside, handcuffed loosely—not resisting, just too stunned to speak. He kept mouthing words at Emily, but no sound came out. His face was pale. His glasses crooked.
Emily tried to speak to the officers, to explain. They nodded, took statements, asked questions. But it didn’t matter.
Someone had called in a complaint. A witness had heard shouting. A woman had been found with her blouse ripped open and a young man standing over her.
Even if no charges stuck—it was protocol now.
The boy was escorted out of the building, hands cuffed, hoodie swinging loose from one arm.
Emily stood near the checkout desk, clutching a loaner jacket someone had handed her, blouse crumpled under her arm. Her cheeks burned with more than embarrassment now.
Shame. Guilt. Confusion.
And an awful, growing sense that she’d caused all of this.
What can she do?
Ripe for the Taking
A new mom discovers she's never been more desirable—and temptation is everywhere.
At 27, Emily Davenport is a new mother adjusting to life after childbirth—a fading marriage, a body still healing, and a routine that leaves her feeling invisible. But as she steps back into the world—work, the gym, errands—she begins to notice it: the looks, the lingering stares, the heat behind every casual touch. Men are watching her. And one by one, they make their move. Ripe for the Taking follows Emily’s slow-burn descent into temptation, where every choice—whether to resist or surrender—leads her deeper into the thrill of being wanted again. Mother. Wife. Woman. Now, she has to choose who she really wants to be.
