Who do we follow?
David Knight
David was very nervous about all of this. He was to be one of those getting a new immigrant family. She's been convinced by a friend of his that it was the right thing to do. The fact it was a pretty female friend and she always loved acts of charity had not been what convinced him to do it at all. He told anyone who ever asked about it.
Though it had seemed a good idea at the time when the pretty, busty blond friend was in front of him, it is not so much now. Luckily he didn't have to worry too much about being stabbed or anything too violent. As there was a family of four on the way: a dad, a son, a mom, and a daughter. He only had to worry about the mom and the daughter. As the father and son had already gotten a job as truck drivers the moment they arrived in the country.
It was strange how fast they had been separated, but he was told it was a policy that helped them assimilate, and it made it so he didn't have to worry about a Muslim getting a stab in the back if he said the wrong thing. So in the end he was quite fine with it. He stood there, feeling nervous about this first meeting, and decided to double-check the house again. He went over the two bathrooms, the living room, and the main and side bedrooms.
He was double-checking everything was clean and he hadn't left anything embarrassing out, like a Playboy magazine. That, and he was also enjoying looking over his new house, as it was a bonus he hadn't expected. When he had signed up for the program, he had panicked initially, wondering how he was going to put a family of four in his single studio apartment. He'd even considered finding a way of backing out when he found in the paperwork he got a brand new house. It was a small one, but it was his to house himself and the family.
He'd never be able to afford it on his own, so it was quite the prize for him. It made the stress of the whole thing worth it. His heart rate shot up as he heard the four bells ring, and he quickly checked the time on his phone and found they were a few minutes early. He ran to the front door and opened it. There in front of him were two Moroccan women, an older one that was a bit curvy while her daughter was thin.
They both had on Takchita's, a type of dress made and worn in Morocco. They also had hijabs on, so all he could see of their faces were two sets of dark brown eyes. There was a moment of awkward silence as he stared at him and they stared back. Then David remembered that Morocco was like a lot of other Islamic countries and that man's word was law. So they were waiting for him to speak first.
"Good morning! "Welcome to your new home; come in! Come in!" Davis said loudly, hoping that he could make up for his mistake with loudness and a very welcoming stance. He wasn't sure if he was failing or succeeding with the woman's faces covered; there was no reaction for him to see. He saw they had bags and immediately went to grab them, hoping being physically helped by the two women would improve his first impression.
"Go on in and look around; I'll bring you bags into the living room." David said over his shoulder to the two women. Who did as they were told and went inside? The daughter quickly went to her new bedroom and shut the door behind her. While the mother looked around the rest of the house, eventually ending in the kitchen. Eventually, after bringing in a few bags, he went to the kitchen to talk with the mother.
"While I've brought it all in! "So where do you and your daughter want your stuff?" David asked, still trying to be as helpful as possible. The daughter came out of her room at his question, suddenly grabbed a few bags with her stuff from the living room, and rushed back to her new bedroom, slamming the door behind her. David winced seeing she was clearly trying to avoid him.
"I guess I haven't made the greatest impression." David said with a self-deprecating smile. The mother was quick to reassure him in broken English that he was fine. Her daughter was just going through some things, and he wasn't at fault. David took her words to hear as best he could. He spent the rest of the day getting the mom settled in and getting the kitchen in order. Once they were done, David spent what was left of the afternoon trying to find shows he and the mom would enjoy watching.
Jamila spent as much time as she could watching shows with the men that was now responsible for them. She was as nice as she could be, though it was difficult for her. She had nothing against the man, but her husband and son were far away and had been sent away, and putting them together with this stranger felt unnerving. Though it was far better than their old home.
Her foolish son had spoken far too harshly of the regime that ruled over the country of Morocco. Which they had no tolerance for, so it was either flee or be confined in the prison cells to be repeatedly beaten. So they left and know they were in a new country across the sea and the man in her life was nowhere to be found. Her daughter wasn't handling the situation too well.
She would have to talk to her about it, but not before they were assured of their place. Her daughter had done much to insult the man of the house, and she needed to show they were truly grateful or there would be consequences. It would be easy to show how grateful she was, though it was rather shameful, especially with her husband's current status unknown to her, but she would do what she must to help her daughter thrive in this new land.
There was a rather obvious reason there were only two bedrooms. Though the head of house, David, had been polite enough to not point out the reason why. When the time came, she made a standard Moroccan dinner for the three of them. David thanked her politely. Well, her daughter Zohra did their best to ignore her and David. David tried to make small talk but was ignored by Zohra.
Jamila tried to get her daughter to talk to the man and give him a chance. She got an angry look and was ignored as well. In the end Zohra ate as fast as she could and then went back to her room once more. Jamila, embarrassed by her daughter's behavior, tried to cover for her daughter. "Sorry, my little Zohra is not feeling well today; hopefully she will be soon." Jamila said hoping that excuse would work.
She saw immediately it didn't work, as David gave her a sad but knowing look on his face. "It's okay; I get she doesn't like me, but hopefully that'll change as we get used to each other." David said, trying to remind Hopeful. Which Jamila was hurt by a bit as he was trying to be positive and understanding while her daughter was not. Which was a poor reward for saving them from daily beatings in her country's prisons.
She knew she would be making it up to him later tonight, as it was the only thing she could do that would make him feel better about her and her daughter being here. Which she needed him to be as if he got too negative about the situation and reported it; they would face consequences for the failure of assimilation and be coming problems for the citizens.
So it was that latter that night; they all got ready for bed. Zohra locked her door, and David made to sleep on the couch in the living room. At her questioning gaze, he spikes up. "You don't have to worry; I won't force you to share a bed with me." David said, trying to sound as reassuring as possible, which caused Jamila to panic a bit as she couldn't give him the proper thanks while he was on the coach in the hearing range of her daughter.
She quickly went to him and spoke quickly in broken English. "No, I cannot allow you to come to bed!" Jamila said and then brought him to the main bedroom bed, where he lay there a bit stunned at her forcefulness. "Wait for her; I get ready for bed!" Jamila whisper shouted at David before heading to the bathroom. David lay there a bit stunned, wondering what had just happened.
Jamila in the bathroom took a moment to breath. Once she had herself under control, she looked for the clothes that were waiting for her in the bathroom. She found the special outfit and quickly took off her own clothes, then proceeded to put on the new night outfit that had been left for her. She then left the bathroom to entertain the master of the house as she was supposed to.
What is Jamila's new outfit?
