Chapter 39
Werewolves
It was the night of a full moon, and as I walked through the woods of Mystic Falls, the sounds of wolves howling echoed through the night. I was trying to get an idea of the number of wolves that had decided to come to the town. I had so far managed to stay under their radar, having only seen Jules and Mason in the town, it seemed as though their only intentions were to try and bring Tyler into their pack. Though as far as I was aware, he had not triggered the curse by killing a human, well, he hadn't for now, but I thought that would change soon enough. Whether he would accidentally kill someone or be **** into it by Jules and Tyler to trigger the werewolf curse.
So right now I was wandering through the woods tracking the pack so I could get an idea of the numbers they had. Hopefully, there would not be a large amount of them, as they would pose a significant threat to the vampires that now reside here. While they could not kill me, the other vampires are not so lucky, and with vampires and werewolves being natural enemies, the chance of a conflict breaking out was there. With some luck and a lot of careful scheming, I may be able to keep the peace in the town, though even I doubted that it would remain even if I did manage to establish
[it.
It
](http://it.It) did not take long for me to encounter the first werewolf, a large brown wolf dived out at me, easily matching the speed of a young vampire. I dived to the side as the wolf sailed past, the werewolf was massive, easily reaching up to my shoulder at its apex, and I knew its strength was just as unnatural as its size. Giant gnashing teeth snapped at me, attempting to drive the venom-covered teeth into my vampiric flesh. Again I dived to the side, allowing the beast to jump straight past me. Enraged, it came at me again, yet I only dodged a bit, not wanting to kill one of the wolves and start the inevitable
[conflict.
As
](http://conflict.As) I dodged the beast with ease, my enhanced hearing picked up the growls of two more wolves coming at me. Looking back, I saw the two wolves coming at me. Each of the wolves shared the size of the first one, and their fury seemed to equal that of the first. I dodged the three of them for some time, not a single one managing to land a blow onto my flesh. Yet they tried all the same, claws like daggers trying to tear my flesh to pieces along with the giant teeth attempting to gain purchase in my body.
Growing bored, I shot myself into the air, hovering dozens of feet above the ground, yet the wolves did not stop, instead throwing themselves tens of feet into the air to try and drag me back to the earth. Honestly, it was quite amusing watching the savage beasts attempting to kill me, not knowing that all their effort would have no real effect on me. I stopped focusing on the three enraged wolves below me and instead focused further outwards looking for more of the wolves. My hearing picked up more wolves further into the forest and I shot off in that direction.
About two dozen wolves ran through the forest without much care, until they noticed me, then their lack of care turned into pure fury as they tried to attack me. Vampires were the natural enemies of vampires, it seemed as though my very existence turned their rage up to eleven. Dropping down to the floor, I had to immediately start dodging the savage attacks, yet with each one, I learned all the more about the beasts. They attacked relentlessly, but with an almost instinctual amount of teamwork, they never left even a single opening, as when one did appear, it was instantly covered by another one of the wolves.
The night was starting to disappear as daylight came over the hills, and the pack of werewolves seemed to notice this; they darted off in different directions away from me. One seemed slightly slower than the rest so I followed closely behind it, trying not to allow it to realise I was giving chase. I had spent an entire night dodging their attacks, not bothering to try to remain undiscovered, so I hoped that now that I was trying to remain hidden, the wolf would not find me.
Slowly trailing behind the lone wolf I watched as it seemed to lose consciousness before my eyes. The wolf looked almost peaceful when not actively trying to tear you apart. I sat nearby on a rock watching as it turned to a human before my eyes, the giant wolf slowly turning into a young woman before my eyes.
I sat there for almost an hour as the wolf turned back to human before she started to stir, waking slowly but surely. Soon enough, the women started to stand, and what I saw surprised me far more than anything else I had seen that night. The face of Hayley Marshall entered my vision, and the young woman, upon noticing me, seemed suddenly aware of the fact that she was not alone, covering herself from my view. With a wave of my hand, clothes appeared on the young brunette, earning a gasp of surprise from the woman.
The young woman's surprise me a lot, as in the show, she appeared much later in the story, quite a while after all the originals appeared in Mystic Falls. It was not the first time my existence was screwed with the story, but it still surprised me every time it happened.
"How did you do that? Vampires can't use magic", Hayley spoke for the first time, suspicion on her face. "I am a special vampire" I said with a slight laugh, attempting to lighten the mood. "surely you should be with the other wolves" I asked her knowing full well that this was not her pack. "no I am only travelling with them" she answered back a slight note of sadness appearing on her face before it disappeared just as quickly as it appeared.
"Are you hungry? The Mystic Grill is not too far away," I said, attempting to lighten the mood. Confusion replaced the suspicion on her face for a moment before the young brunette nodded and walked in the direction of the town. We walked for a while in silence before Hayley spoke again, "What do you want with us?" she asked me. I thought for a moment before answering, "I intend to take this town as a second home of mine, and with me comes a large amount of vampires. All I want is peace between the wolves and the vampires; otherwise, we will spend the rest of our time attempting to wipe each other out," I answered. Hayley just nodded at my answer before continuing in silence.
We walked the rest of the way to the Mystic Grill in complete silence. Hayley seemed to be thinking about my words, perhaps doubting them. Walking into the Mystic Grill, I realised it had only just opened, being far quieter than usual. We walked over to a table and were waiting to be served. "Are you telling the truth?" Hayley asked, obviously still doubting my intentions. I was, of course, telling mostly the truth, but I mainly just wanted to make sure I stayed on good terms with her, as I knew that it would be ideal for the future for us to stay on good terms with each other. If all went as it did in the show, then Hayley would eventually become family.
"Yes, I am. I do want the wolves and the vampires to be on at least good terms with one another," I responded, answering her question. Hayley seemed to believe my words at least partly. We sat in silence for a while until a server came over to take our orders and then we just spoke about random things for a while.
"Do you plan to stay in Mystic Falls?" I asked her. "Maybe for a while", she answered "I am looking for my family", she continued, finally revealing why she came to Mystic Falls in the show. "Your family, do they live here, if they are still alive?" she asked, trying to quickly pass over the slight bit of vulnerability she showed. "They are still alive, and will be here soon; by next week, they will be here", I answered the young woman's question.
"What happened with your family, if you don't mind me asking?" I asked the young woman, watching as her face turned slightly sad at the question. "I don't know, I grew up in foster homes for a while, bouncing around from one to the other. Then, when I triggered the curse, I turned in my room and tore it apart. As you can imagine they kicked me out as soon as they found out, then I kind of just travelled around for a while. After a while, I found another like me, another wolf. I thought I was alone for so long; it was nice to find others like me. I stayed with their pack for a while, before moving on, hoping to find any member of my family that was still alive, though I haven't had much luck," she answered my question before falling silent.
I reached over and grabbed her hand, trying to comfort her before speaking, "Thanks for telling me. If you need help finding them all, you have to do is ask," I said, knowing full well that her family was dead. But I knew telling her that with no evidence would not help the situation so all I would do would be to offer her my help.
We finished our meal before parting ways with the agreement that we would stay in contact. Great for both of us, Hayley had also agreed to talk to Jules and Mason, hopefully convincing them to at least sit down and talk with me about their future here. I couldn't let a few werewolves interfere with my plans here, but I would still prefer them as an ally rather than an enemy.
