An Influencer

"OK, guys, so I'm what's called a flea market outside of Toluca Lake," said Kayleigh Rivers, a 23-year-old "fashion and lifestyle influencer," as she live-streamed. She wore a tight yellow strapless, floral-print sundress and strapping wedge-heel sandals.

The daughter of a very wealthy attorney and agent father and fashion designer mother, Kayleigh grew up in a life of luxury, never wanting for anything and never having to do anything for herself. As a teen, she began her own make-up, hair, and fashion tutorials, and had a brief web series documenting her fabulous life. She dropped out of high school and earned her GED and now had over a million followers.

Neither of her parents were thrilled with her choice of "career," but she did make quite of bit of money promoting brands, spas and resorts, showing up to club openings, and had even made some red-carpet events.

"Now this 'flea market,' isn't your typical one," she continued. "You won't find tacky metal signs for your garden and useless junk like that. It's a good place to find funky vintage clothing and jewelry."

Kayleigh live-streamed some more then put her phone up and sighed. She was going out with a friend later to an exclusive club, and they loved to compete to see who could get the most expensive drinks bought for them.

Kayleigh looked around then saw the "Nodding Necklace" at a small stand ran by a hunched over old woman who looked like a stereotypical gypsy from 1940s movies. "Cool, lots of people say 'yes,' to me," said Kayleigh more to herself than to the old woman.

"Solid gold," said the woman in a scratch voice with an eastern European accent.

"How much?"

"For you, $400."

"I'll give you $200."

"Make it $250."

"Fine, whatever. Venmo? Cash App? Zelle?"

The woman stared blankly at Kayleigh.

"OK, cash it is." Kayleigh took out her wallet and gave the woman 3 $100 bills. After getting her change, in the form of 5 well-worn $10 bills, Kayleigh put the necklace on.

"Have fun," said the woman with a slight cackle.
