Now What is Silver Swan's next move
A Plotting Swan
Valerie Beaudry hummed a half-forgotten tune, her voice low and steady as her hand moved through her son’s hair. The sound filled the quiet penthouse, a rhythm as natural as breathing. His small weight against her arm anchored her; the warmth of his skin felt like proof that the world hadn’t come entirely undone.
She brushed her thumb across his temple, soothing a faint crease in his brow. Poor thing—he’d been through enough. Her chest tightened with that familiar ache, equal parts love and fierce protectiveness. No one would hurt him. Not again. Not while she could still draw breath.
The city lights spilled across the room, catching in the glass and pooling on the floor like dim water. Somewhere out there, people hurried through their own troubles, but that world felt remote, irrelevant. This one—this small, quiet space where he slept and she could keep watch—was all that mattered.
Adjusting the blanket, Valerie smoothed it over his shoulders until he sighed and settled. The simple sound sent a ripple of warmth through her, a relief so deep it almost felt like peace. She rested her cheek against the top of his head, her heartbeat matching his, her mind blank except for one steady truth: he was safe, and she would keep it that way.
Right now, they had what they needed—food stocked neatly in the cupboards, clean water humming through polished taps, the quiet hum of climate control keeping the air warm and still. Yet the comfort felt brittle, as though one wrong move might shatter it.
Valerie moved through the penthouse with practiced precision, checking locks, drawing curtains, scanning her phone for updates that never came. The money had been secured—transferred, hidden, safe—but security was never just a matter of accounts. It was silence, obscurity, invisibility. None of which came naturally to her.
A woman like her had always lived in the light. Cameras, charity galas, magazine spreads—she’d learned to smile on cue, to let attention wrap around her like silk. Now, every instinct she’d honed felt like a liability. The thought of a lens turning her way sent a ripple of unease down her spine.
She glanced toward the bedroom where her son slept, the faint shape of him visible through the cracked door. He needed peace, anonymity, quiet. The kind of quiet she’d never known how to keep.
Her reflection caught in the darkened window—composed, immaculate, familiar—and for a heartbeat she didn’t recognize it. The woman who stared back looked too polished to be hiding, too visible to be safe. Valerie let out a sight slowly, pressing her hand to the cool glass.
Power had its limits, and Valerie could feel them pressing close. Money could buy walls, locks, guards—but walls could crumble, and guards could be bought. What her son needed was permanence, loyalty that couldn’t be shaken by fear or greed.
She stood by the window again, the city glittering beneath her like a field of broken glass. Somewhere in that maze of lights were people who could be useful, people who could be shaped into something dependable. The thought settled in her mind with a strange sort of calm.
Her reflection regarded her with cool composure, the faintest curve of a smile at the edge of her lips. She’d always been surrounded by those who served her needs, who anticipated her whims before she voiced them. That had been the natural order of things. Why should it be any different now? Her son deserved no less.
The idea began to take root, quiet and deliberate. She would need more than security staff—she would need caretakers, attendants, a network of people whose loyalty would circle her son like a ring of fire. Not hired hands, but something closer. Something devoted.
Valerie smoothed the fabric of her sleeve, her gaze distant. The beginnings of a plan whispered through her thoughts, unfolding in careful layers. She didn’t rush it. Good plans required patience, and she had learned patience well.
What will Valerie come up with?
