the shared chain

The cold, grey light of the Berlin morning crept sluggishly through the tall mullioned windows of the apartment, settling over the parquet like a shroud.

An hour earlier, Loona had retreated wordlessly into her bedroom. She hadn't spared a backward glance. The heavy double door had clicked shut with an understated latch, leaving the two of us behind in a stifling, depleted silence.

Neither of us spoke. Down on our knees, we had worked with a damp rag to scrub the traces of the night from the boards. Emma, whose hands still shook so hard that water sloshed against the rim of the bucket, had not raised her head once. When she pulled her sodden, crumpled blouse back over skin burning with welts, only a shallow, scraping breath left her lips. We avoided each other's eyes, yet the air between us was poisoned by the shared disgrace. When she finally slipped out of the flat, her phone chimed softly in the corridor: the first ping from Loona—the surveillance protocol had gone live.

Four hours later, the harsh neon glare of the institute hallway cut into my sleep-starved eyes.

The stench of vending-machine coffee, wet asphalt, and industrial disinfectant had replaced the scent of bourbon and cedarwood. Around me hummed the mundane, trivial clamor of university life: laughter, the dull thud of laptop bags, hurried steps across matte stone tiles.

For me, every stride was an ordeal. The raw skin beneath the stainless-steel rings flared with every movement, the padlock knocking dull and heavy against my pubic bone. Crisp, unyielding denim pressed relentlessly into trapped tissue. My nerves were shredded; the paranoia that any lecturer or student passing by might trace the hard outline of the bracket through the fabric tightened like a noose around my throat.

She stood waiting outside the Clinical Anatomy lecture hall.

Emma leaned against the white wall, fingers clenched around a paper coffee cup with both hands. She wore a dark turtleneck pulled all the way to her chin beneath a long wool coat—carefully styled to smother any trace of discipline. Yet deep, bluish hollows bruised the skin around her eyes, and her usually immaculate posture looked brittle at the seams.

The instant my gaze met hers, my stomach wrenched tight, and the memories of the night before detonated with brutal clarity behind my eyes. I didn't see the aloof medical student wrapped in a heavy winter coat. I saw her exposed, defenseless body caught in the amber glow of the salon, huddled on all fours in the dirt, forehead crushed into the timber while the crop cracked down on reddened skin. I remembered the wet sheen between her trembling thighs, the muffled sobs, her lips pressed to Loona’s bare arches—and how that very same girl had forced me, only minutes later, to lick the boards clean from her soles.

A rush of burning despair, helpless rage, and a deeply sickening, persistent current of arousal hit my veins all at once. It was a poisonous spiral: I despised her for what she had orchestrated at the party, yet the visual of her ruined flesh remained burned irrevocably into my mind. Within the cylinder, the trapped flesh surged painfully once more against the unyielding lattice, as though my body took sick pleasure in mocking its own humiliation.

Beside her stood Sophie and Julian.

"Well, look who decided to show up," Julian grinned broadly as I drew near. He pushed off the wall, measuring me from head to toe with that patronizing amusement that turned my blood to ice. "Man, John, you pulled quite the vanishing act yesterday. What happened? Get cold feet the second things got interesting?"

Sophie let out a low laugh, nudged Emma with her elbow, and pinned me with a mocking stare. "He looked completely out of his depth. Tell me, Emma, did you ever end up calling him out after? You sounded pretty set on seeing it through."

Emma’s grip tightened so hard around the paper cup that the plastic lid buckled with a sharp snap. Black coffee sloshed over her knuckles.

She raised her chin, and for the fraction of a heartbeat, our eyes locked. Not a shred of superiority remained. There was only the raw, freezing horror of two drowning souls shackled to the exact same iron weight. I saw in her dilated pupils the exact mirror of the disgrace that had eaten through me. One wrong word, one careless slip before these two witnesses, and Loona would bring the guillotine down on both our heads.

"Drop it, Sophie," Emma said. Her voice sounded strained, but she forced a thin, arrogant smirk that barely reached her lips. "He figured out his place. Last night was enough drama to last the week."

Julian knit his brows, plainly disappointed at being denied another sideshow. "Seriously? You were singing a very different tune yesterday."

"I don't make a habit of wasting my time on jokes," Emma cut him off with razor-sharp finality. Turning directly toward me, she stepped half a pace forward, her frame shielding the view from the others.

Her eyes glinted with a venomous blend of smothered fury and sheer panic for her own survival.

"We need to go over the presentation files in the library basement after the lecture, John," she announced, loud enough to carry to the group. Then her voice dropped to a barely audible, venomous hiss meant strictly for me: "Twelve sharp, in the rear journal stacks. Not a second late. I have to take the photo for her—and if there's so much as a single scratch on that latch, I'm dragging you straight to hell with me."

The minutes inside the lecture hall dragged by like cooling tar. Every glance at the wall clock felt like an insult; the second hand seemed to jerk forward in rhythm with the dull, unrelenting throb inside the steel housing. Ahead of me sat Emma, the back of her neck held completely rigid. Only when she raised her pen did a tiny hitch in her shoulder betray how the coarse wool of her sweater scraped against raw skin. We were two live shells sitting in an auditorium full of oblivious students.

When the lecturer finally stepped away from the podium, the sudden swell of voices acted like a starter's gun.

I waited until the crowd surged through the double doors before slipping out via the side stairs. The stone steps leading down into the library basement were damp and frigid. The smell of decaying paper, binding glue, and musty dust hit me head-on, mingled with the distant, mechanical thrum of the ventilation shafts. Down here, there were no windows—only flickering fluorescent tubes casting warped shadows between the towering steel shelves of the periodical archives.

At the very end of the final aisle, she was already waiting.

Emma had shed her heavy coat; it hung draped over one of the metal shelves like a sloughed skin. In the tight turtleneck, she looked leaner, more hunted. As the heavy fire door clicked shut behind me with a solid, metallic seal, she spun on her heel. Her pupils were blown wide, hands clutching her smartphone like a weapon.

"Lock it," she ordered in a raspy, cutting whisper.

I drove the heavy sliding bolt home, the iron latch falling into place with a dull clunk. The isolation was absolute.

"Trousers down. Right now." Emma closed the distance until I could feel her ragged, mint-and-stale-smoke breath brushing against my cheek. Not a single trace of the polished tease from the student flat remained. It was the raw, vicious survival instinct of the condemned, forced to channel the pressure downward to keep from suffocating under it herself. "I am not taking the heat because you dragged your feet."

My hands moved on pure reflex. The waist button yielded, the zipper parting with a harsh rasp. As the heavy denim slipped over my hips, the black lace thong came into view—delicate, sheer, stretched almost mockingly over the engorged tissue that stood out starkly under the bleak basement light. The brushed stainless-steel casing, the heavy miniature padlock, the fine lattice bars digging deep into raw flesh: everything was laid bare before her.

Emma sucked air sharply through her teeth. A flash of stunned revulsion, tangled with that same dark, perverse fascination she had displayed in the apartment, passed over her face.

"You are absolutely repulsive, John," she breathed, lifting her phone. "She took a whip to me right in front of your eyes, and you have nothing better to do down here than strain like a dog against the bars all over again."

Without warning, two freezing fingers clamped onto the lock. She didn't test it gently; she gave the shackle a sharp, vicious twist upward to inspect the hinge. A piercing stab flared through my groin, the edges of the base ring driving brutally into my pubic bone, tearing a smothered cry from my throat. My knees buckled slightly, fingers digging into the cold steel uprights of the library shelving.

"Hold still!" she hissed, dropping to the bare concrete in front of me in one fluid, furious motion.

The smartphone hummed softly as she brought the lens inches from the metal. Three sharp shutter snaps echoed down the narrow aisle. One from directly above, one from the flank displaying the untampered seal, and a third capturing the black lace and the telltale dampness gathering steadily within the mesh.

Emma scrambled upright, fingers flying across the screen with feverish speed to dispatch the sequence.

For ten, fifteen agonizing seconds, the only sound was our heavy, uneven breathing against the deep drone of the overhead fixtures. Then the phone vibrated in her palm.

Emma locked her eyes onto the illuminated display. Her lids narrowed, a bitter, almost triumphant twitch pulling at the corners of her lips. She didn't turn the screen toward me, but her words sliced through the aisle like glass:

"Loona replied." Sliding the device slowly into her pocket, she stepped squarely into my personal space and laid both hands flat against my belt. "She wants you to spend the rest of the day remembering who makes the rules. Belt off, John. Right now. And you keep those jeans unfastened and slung so low that with every step across campus, you'll be praying they don't fall clean to your ankles in front of everyone."
