Chapter 16 by fantaghiro

What's next?

the last hypnosis

Sarah was no longer the woman you had married.

She moved with Renee’s restless energy, her sharp gaze, the simmering resentment that had once defined your stepdaughter’s attitude toward you.

The warmth and trust between the two of you had all but vanished, replaced by distance and icy silences.

****, you somehow convinced her to go for a final hypnosis session.

You sat beside Sarah in the quiet room, you voice steady but gentle as you guided her beneath the surface, hoping to reach the part of her still Sarah — the part buried beneath layers of guilt and identity confusion.

“Let go of the anger,” you whispered. “Let the real you come forward.”

But as the session deepened, it became clear: Sarah was too deeply intertwined with Renee’s spirit — her love for the daughter she had lost, her guilt for taking over her body — all driving her to be Renee. Her obsession over losing her daughter - and taking over her life - had made her transformation far more powerful and complete than your hypnosis could have done.

Your heart sank. Was Sarah lost to you forever? Sarah remained entranced, silent, while you sat searching your mind desperately grasping for a solution. A crazy idea sprung up. It would be a longshot but maybe ... just maybe you could recover Sarah by taking a completely different approach.

You thought for a moment. Renee's hatred and bitterness for you was because you were her step-father. Even though her parents had separated before you came into the picture, Renee blamed you for keeping her parents from reconciling. She had directed all her pain and frustration over their failed marriage at one person - you.

Maybe you could change that. Her feelings toward you were too strong to be simply erased, but you could work on her memories - on the positive feelings and happiness associated with ones around fatherhood.

You started again with this new approach, speaking softer, weaving in memories not of Sarah’s life, but of Renee’s past — moments with her biological father: fishing trips by the lake, quiet bedtime stories, his steady, protective presence.

“Feel his love,” James said, “his trust. Let that love be with you now.”

And then, carefully,

“Let that trust and love flow to me. Let me be the one who cares for you, who keeps you safe.”

When Sarah awoke, her eyes flickered with something new — a softness, a hint of calm James hadn’t seen in months.
