What's next?
safe at home
The stairwell of the Altbau smelled of floor wax, cold stone, and the distant aroma of sautéed garlic drifting down from the second floor. That scent had once marked the familiar threshold to comfort, but today every single worn wooden step felt like a calculated sentence.
My thighs were on fire. With every step I dragged upward, the heavy denim of my jeans sagged an inch lower. Without a belt, there was no purchase; I had to force my pelvis back, clamp my glutes tight, and press my knees together purely to keep the fabric from pooling down to my ankles. Yet every defensive adjustment exacted a vicious toll: the steel assembly—forced into its narrowest notch by Emma in the sterile chill of stall three barely an hour ago—ground into my pubic bone like a blunt blade. The edges of the base ring bit so deep into bruised tissue that cold sweat broke across my temples at every impact.
And yet—right where reason should have screamed in pure agony—an absurd, toxic contradiction kept pulsing.
Inside the cylinder, the raw tissue answered the unrelenting constriction with stubborn, uncontrollable swelling. Every nerve begged for expansion, for release, but the steel bars offered not a millimeter of give. The pressure generated a dull, burning ache that radiated clean up into my kidneys. It was an utterly emasculating heat: my own body was betraying me, pulling a dark, intoxicating high from the sheer confinement and the constant dread of exposure, turning my knees even weaker. I felt paralyzed by a numbing passivity, like driftwood swept along by a current I had long since lost the will to fight.
When my trembling hands turned the key in the latch, all I prayed for was the empty silence of the hall. A few minutes to lean against the wall, yank my trousers up, and close my eyes.
The door swung inward—and my chest seized.
Resting on the dark parquet of the hallway were two pointed black designer pumps with dizzying stiletto heels, kicked carelessly beside the console table. From the living room drifted the muffled cadence of a jazz playlist, laced with the heavy, sweet scent of vanilla, expensive perfume, and Prosecco.
Vanessa.
She had used her spare key. She was here.
Blood roared deafeningly in my ears. Every instinct screamed at me to pivot on my heel and bolt back down the stairs. But where? The campus was under Emma's surveillance; out on the street, my falling trousers would turn me into a public spectacle within three minutes; and at eight sharp, Loona demanded my presence. There was no shelter left. The net was seamless.
"John? Is that finally you?" her voice carried from the living room, rich, lazy, and wrapped in effortless entitlement. "Come inside, sweetheart. And bring me a glass of water, my throat is parched."
Kicking off my shoes, I had to brace one hand against the wall to keep from pitching over. Every inch of fabric shifting across my waist felt like an electric shock. With both hands, I yanked the oversized knit sweater firmly down to conceal the open waistband and the two-finger gap in the fly. Then I moved mechanically to the kitchen for the glass, stepping into the living room with stiff, shuffling strides.
Vanessa was draped along the length of the beige sectional. She had already loosened her business suit; the black pencil skirt had ridden well above her knees, baring long legs encased in sheer, lustrous nylon. She swirled a nearly empty flute in one hand, eyes half-lidded, head resting back into the plush velvet cushions.
"Thank God," she murmured without truly looking at me, reaching a hand out for the water. "The shopping frenzy on Kurfürstendamm is going to be the death of me. The arches of my feet are throbbing."
She drained the glass in two swallows, set it down with a click on the glass table, and turned her head languidly toward me. Her gaze swept over my rigid posture—and a faint, mocking curve touched her lips.
"Well, what are you standing there like a statue for? You know what comes next. On your knees, big guy. My heels feel like raw meat."
A leaden paralysis settled over me. My will to resist had long since been ground to dust; endless submission to Loona had carved an automatic reflex that flattened my pride without friction. I stepped toward the couch and sank down.
The hard parquet met my kneecaps with a dull thud. At that exact second, the inevitable happened: folding my knees stripped the heavy denim of what little tension remained. With a soft rustle, the jeans slid cleanly down past my hipbones. The hem of my sweater caught and rode upward—leaving the delicate, elastic band of black lace completely exposed, stark and undeniable against my pale skin.
Vanessa let out an amused snort. A low, incredulous chuckle rose from her throat, cutting straight through me.
"You can't be serious, John," she said, arching an eyebrow as she leaned forward to peer down at my waist with open amusement. "Are you wearing that scrap *again*? I thought after last time you'd gotten over that bizarre little phase."
Her laugh grew louder, shaking her head as she extended her right foot. The smooth nylon stretched taut across her arch as she planted her painted toes squarely on my thigh—barely a handbreadth from the rigid, cylindrical bulge showing through the cloth.
"It's… it's just… comfortable," I stammered, fixing my gaze entirely on the grain of the floorboards. Shame rose like molten lead into my cheeks, but far worse was the absurd, intoxicating wave of helplessness that swept over me. Her casual mockery, her unbothered laughter—she viewed me as a harmless eccentric, a neutered little boy with an odd habit, and that very perception reduced me to an utterly degraded fixture in her eyes.
"Comfortable," she echoed with a scoff, running her toes slowly along the rim of the lace band. The elastic stretched, tugging directly on the steel cage beneath and driving the base ring brutally into my bruised tendons. I bit my lower lip hard enough to taste copper just to keep from crying out. "Whatever you say, darling. As long as you work out these knots, you can wear whatever you like underneath. Get to it."
Lifting trembling hands, I took hold of her heel and began working the smooth ball of her foot with mechanical pressure. Her perfume mingled with the warm scent of nylon; my fingers obediently dug into her arches while I remained bowed in the dirt. With every breath, the miniature padlock tapped against the cylinder—a persistent, faint click that Vanessa blissfully mistook for the cracking of my knuckles.
In the back pocket of my slumped jeans, the phone buzzed. A short, impatient pulse.
I didn't dare move, but seconds later it rattled again. Three hard, consecutive vibrations.
"Someone's blowing up your phone," Vanessa noted lazily, eyes slipping shut as she let out a contented sigh under my thumbs. "Go ahead and check it. Just don't let go of my feet."
Keeping one hand anchored to her arch, my free, slick hand reached around and fished out the device. I angled it low over the floorboards, shielded from her half-closed eyes.
Three banners were queued up on the lock screen like the headlights of an oncoming freight train.
The first was from Timo.
*"Bro! Just booked the Flixbus for tomorrow. Getting in at ZOB at 2 PM. Tell Loona to get the sheets washed ;) Hyped for some console sessions, my man. Let's hop on a call later!"*
A wave of nausea hit me. The casual camaraderie, the absolute oblivion in his words caught in my throat. He was coming here to claim my room, my former life, and the woman who had locked me into this steel collar—and he expected me to meet him at the door with a grin and carry his bags.
The second banner made my pulse spike with a desperate flutter. Nadja.
*"Hey John… I was just thinking about our chat. You looked so completely drained at uni this morning. Is your circulation holding up? Don't stress yourself out today and get some rest, okay? Talk soon :)"*
The gentleness in her message felt like water in a scorched desert. A piece of me—the broken, childish remnant of my pride—clung desperately to those words. She knew nothing of my disgrace. She still saw a human being, offering unprompted kindness. And while I knelt in the dust at Vanessa’s feet, a forbidden, agonizing urge flared up to bury my face in Nadja’s shoulder, confess everything, and let her pull me out of this hole.
Before that fantasy could even solidify, the third banner dropped over the glass. A push notification via the Kidslox admin dashboard, flagged in blood red. Sender: Loona.
*"Vanessa leaves the flat at 7:30 PM. The second the door shuts, you strip the jeans entirely. You remain in the lace and the steel. You wait kneeling in the hallway. Emma has the courtyard key and will collect you at 7:50 PM to bring you to my room. Don't you dare move from that spot."*
No skirt. Only the bare, exposed reality of cold metal against the hallway boards, surrendered to Emma, who had brought me to my knees in a toilet stall two hours ago.
My body answered this total loss of agency with helpless, unyielding rigidity. Caged flesh surged against the icy lattice, battering with desperate force against the interior of the cylinder, seeking room where none existed, colliding with the pubic ring in a jolt of pure pain.
"Ooh, John…," Vanessa murmured suddenly, her voice thick, parting her lids a crack to look down at my hands. "You're pressing awfully hard all of a sudden. What's gotten into you?"
Her brows drew together, and the tip of her foot drifted downward—dangerously close to the front contour of my trousers, where the rigid silhouette of the steel showed unyielding as a stone through the denim.
"I… sorry," I choked out tonelessly, easing my grip on her heel and lowering my head until my forehead nearly grazed the parquet. "I was just… lost in thought."
"Well, think less and rub more," she yawned, stretching luxuriously as she finished the last of her Prosecco. "You have twenty minutes, big guy. Then I have to run for dinner."
I closed my eyes. Beneath me lay the cold timber, before me my stepmother's feet, in my pocket my stepsister's absolute sentence—and in my groin the burning metal, marking down every second toward seven-thirty without pity.
Every sweep of my thumbs over sheer nylon was a bow to the clock. The ticking above the dining table froze the room. Seventeen minutes. Twelve minutes.
Vanessa sighed lazily, switched legs, and finished the final sip from her glass. Her painted toe brushed across my forearm once more—an unthinking, offhand caress reserved for a pet that had completed its chore. She had no concept of how the blood was battering against the walls of my chest. She couldn't know that the rigid contour between my thighs was growing hotter with every breath. The unforgiving notch into which Emma had forced the assembly bit deeper the harder my body fought its own degradation. The arousal was like toxic lead: heavy, filthy, impossible to shake. I knelt there in the dust, forehead bowed, enduring my stepmother's light chuckles while the countdown toward the next tribunal ticked steadily away.
At seven-twenty-nine on the dot, she brushed my hands aside with a lazy motion.
"Heavenly, John," she murmured, slipping into her pumps and reaching for her purse on the console. A quick check in the mirror, a touch of lipstick. "You really do have a gift. But the lace… do give that another thought, sweetheart. We wouldn't want Loona deciding you're completely beyond saving."
She offered a bright laugh, blew me a quick kiss, and stepped out. The heavy apartment door clicked shut with a dull thud. The sound reverberated through the empty flat like a gavel.
Seven-thirty.
The silence dropped over me like icy water.
I didn't hesitate. I couldn't. The command burned in the back of my mind like an open lesion. With trembling fingers, I caught the waistband of my trousers, peeling the fabric over my thighs in a single hurried motion before stepping clear of the legs. The cool air of the room sliced across bare skin like a scalpel.
Nothing remained to shield me. Only the gossamer black mesh stretched like a translucent membrane over the rigid stainless-steel cylinder. The rims of the base ring showed dark purple and inflamed beneath the skin; the cylinder itself sat cold and immovable, sealed behind the brass padlock whose key rested in Emma's coat pocket.
I dragged myself out into the corridor. The boards were freezing against my bare knees as I lowered myself to the floor.
The posture was humiliatingly second nature: thighs locked tight, torso upright, hands resting flat against my thighs. At the slightest shift in balance, the bottom edge of the padlock slammed hard against my pubic bone—a sharp ache that made me grit my teeth. Yet beneath the pain, that dark, intoxicating compliance took root once more. I waited. I was no longer a brother, a student, a man. I was an object waiting for the door to open and the sentence to be carried out.
Seven-forty-nine.
Down in the courtyard, the heavy wrought-iron gate groaned on its hinges. A sound that dropped straight into my gut.
Seconds later, footsteps mounted the stairwell. Firm. Driven. The rhythmic strike of heels against timber, swelling louder with every landing.
Emma.
She had the key. She knew precisely what she was coming to find.
My heart climbed into my throat, breathing shallow through my nose. As the key slid into the lock from the outside and the deadbolt snapped back with a sharp mechanical crack, I shut my eyes for a fraction of a second.
The door swung wide.
Emma stood framed in the threshold. Her dark wool coat hung open over the blouse and narrow skirt from the institute. Her eyes were narrowed, cold, completely stripped of that playful lightness Loona sometimes indulged in. Her expression carried only the hardened relish of an enforcer who remembered exactly how deep she had driven me into the dirt two hours ago.
Her gaze swept down my frame. From my tense shoulders over my pale chest, straight down to the black lace stretched drum-tight over the constrained metal. A thin, venomous smile twitched at the corner of her lips.
"Good boy," she said softly, kicking the door shut with her heel and letting her purse slide onto the console table. "Not a second late."
She closed the distance, her footsteps heavy and deliberate on the parquet, coming to a halt when the tips of her shoes rested inches from my knees. The scent of cold autumn air, leather, and cigarette smoke clung to her clothes.
Slowly, she peeled off her leather gloves, finger by finger, never breaking her stare from my bruised groin.
"She's still on the train," Emma said with calm, cruel satisfaction. "She texted to say she lands here at eight sharp. Which means you and I have ten whole minutes entirely to ourselves."
Leaning down, she clamped my chin in freezing fingers and hauled my face upward.
"Get up," she hissed, the gleam in her eyes promising nothing good. "We're taking you into the bedroom so everything is waiting when she walks through the door. And don't flatter yourself into thinking she's going to care about your bruises."
