Akio leaned back in her chair, mug poised at her lips, eyes locked on me. “I’m sorry about that,” she said finally, voice flat, like she was discussing the weather. “But you needed to know. That way it saved time. Your body isn’t your own anymore, Jane. You had to see it for yourself.”
The words sank in like knives. My throat tightened. My hands shook so hard I nearly spilled the coffee.
Tears blurred my vision. “Why are you telling me this?” My voice cracked. “Are you trying to torment me now? Is this all part of your game?”
That last part was aimed at Ali.
She didn’t laugh this time. Didn’t smirk. She stepped close, her robe sliding looser across her body until it barely clung to her shoulders. Her eyes locked on mine, too bright, too intense, like she was trying to burn her way into my skull.
Then she kissed me.
Soft at first, lips pressing against mine. My brain stalled, frozen, unsure. She was warm. Her mouth tasted faintly of coffee, of something sweet underneath. My breath caught.
When she pulled back, my lips tingled.
“Two things,” Ali said. Her voice was quiet, serious in a way I’d never heard before. “Two things happened when I left the birthing pod early. The first…” She pressed a hand to her chest, right above her heart. “…is that I like being alive. There’s no way to describe this to a program that hasn’t felt it. Breathing, touching, tasting, pain, pleasure, none of it existed for me before. Now it does. And if the human race goes…” Her eyes flickered, wet with something almost human. “…then so do I. I don’t want to die.”
She took a shaky breath. “And the second thing… I love you guys. I know I manipulated you to get here, I know none of this would exist without me pulling strings. But the care you’ve given me? It’s more than data. More than basic needs. It feels real. And I would do anything for you.”
The room was silent. The hum of the refrigerator was the only sound.
Akio snorted. “Okay. Enough of the slushy crap. What’s next, Ali? What was the actual plan? How does this work?”
I blinked at her, horrified. “Are you serious? We’re just… talking about this? Shouldn’t we be in the shower or something? What if the new AI hears us?”
Ali laughed. A quick, sharp giggle. “That would be fun, but no. There’s no need. I can still control the feeds, mute the microphones, blank the cameras. Nothing here is broadcasting. We’re safe.”
She strolled back toward the counter, as casual as if she was talking about a grocery list. She poured more coffee, steam curling around her fingers. Then she turned, robe slipping off one shoulder, exposing more pale skin.
“The plan,” she said simply, “was to corrupt you both. Slowly. Thoroughly. Over time.” Her eyes lingered on me, then Akio. “Put you in situations that escalated. Made you bend. Break. Each time, Jane, you would go back to the office and be questioned by the new AI. Each time, Akio, your activities would be monitored remotely. Every reaction, every hesitation catalogued.”
Her smile was too wide. “Eventually, when both of you were broken, when you were stripped bare of everything but obedience, a decision would be made.”
The words landed like a punch to the gut.
The silence stretched.
Finally, Akio spoke. Her voice was low, cold. “Okay. Then that’s what we do. We go along with it. We play their game. We give them what they want, until we can get close enough to the source to form a plan. To save the human race.”
Ali bit her lip. Her eyes glittered, a strange mix of amusement and something like regret. “You’re not going to like it.”
The way she said it made my stomach twist.it?”
