coming home after 1st date
You come home lighter than you’ve felt in weeks — not from romance, but from something rarer: the thrill of getting it right. The conversation, the rhythm, the sense of discovery. For the first time since taking the job, you feel like a real reporter.
Tom’s on the couch, scrolling through his phone when you walk in. He looks up and grins. “You’re glowing. So—how’d it go?”
You toss your bag down, still smiling. “Better than I expected. We talked for over an hour—about architecture, cities, purpose. It actually felt… real. Like a real date, if that makes sense.”
He sits up, interested. “So you got what you needed?”
“I think so.” You drop onto the couch beside him, still buzzing. “He wasn’t just answering questions—he was thinking out loud. And it wasn’t awkward or stiff, just… easy.”
Tom laughs. “Sounds like you hit your stride.”
“Maybe,” you say. “We even set up another date for Friday. More follow-up than anything—I think there’s a bigger piece here about how people search for meaning when they move somewhere new.”
Tom nods, impressed. “That’s great, babe. Really. You’re already finding your angle.”
You look at him, relieved, grateful. “Thanks for not thinking this whole assignment is insane.”
He shrugs, smiling. “It’s weird, sure. But it’s also kind of amazing, watching you do what you’re meant to do.”
You sink back into the couch, the city lights flickering through the window. The room feels warm, grounded. For the first time since Kansas City began feeling like an experiment, it starts to feel like a story — one you might actually be able to tell.
your phone dings, it's a text from Rob: hey there, just wanted to check in, make sure you got home OK.
followed up by: BTW you're the best kisser I've ever met, you're something special Claire
you smile and blush a little as you assure him you're home safe and he was a good kisser too.
"you look a little flush, Who's texting?" Tom asks with a raised eyebrow.
"Oh, it's Rob, he just wanted to make sure I got home OK, he's really sweet." you smile down at your phone.
"I bet he is..." Tom said, his usually cheerful face falling for a moment.
