Chapter 49 by fantaghiro
What's next?
a 2nd try
Over the next few days, Diego kept trying - sometime subtly, other times openly. Finally, he made his move at Chase's house to see if confronting her there could help.
Valerie was ironing clothes in the kitchen of Chase’s home. Sunlight slanted across the counter, highlighting the gentle curves of her younger face, her precise motions, the quiet concentration in every movement. Her soft Spanish hum filled the room.
Diego approached cautiously, clutching the tattered notebook of notes and photos he had compiled. “Mom—Valeria,” he began, voice strained. “Please… look at these. Don’t you remember?”
Valerie looked up slowly, her dark eyes meeting his. Something flickered—a whisper of recognition—but her hands remained steady on the iron. She shook her head lightly, a smile tinged with pity. “Diego… hijo… you are worried for nothing. Everything is fine. Señor Chase… he helps us. He gives us purpose.”
Diego slammed the photos on the table. “No! You’re not yourself! Look! You were a doctor, you—”
A faint shadow crossed her features, a pause, a hesitation. She reached for a photograph, tracing the face of Valeria with her finger. “I… I remember… bits… pero… eso fue otra vida,” she murmured. <…but that was another life.>
Diego saw it—flickers of her old self. His pulse raced. “Exactly! That’s the real you! I know you’re in there!”
Chase entered quietly, leaning against the doorway, observing the confrontation with a small, unreadable smile. His presence was calm, confident, almost paternal, but with an underlying sharpness that made Diego’s stomach tighten.
“Ah, Diego,” Chase said smoothly, voice rich with control. “I see you are concerned for your mother—Valerie. That is admirable. But perhaps you do not understand… she is happy. She thrives. She has purpose. Don’t you want her to be happy?”
Diego’s hands shook. “This isn’t… happiness! She’s not… she’s not herself!”
Chase stepped closer, placing a hand on Valerie’s shoulder. She stiffened for only a moment before relaxing, leaning slightly into his touch. Her dark eyes softened. “Sí… he cares for me… mucho,” she admitted, voice low and almost tender.
Chase’s smile widened imperceptibly. “See, Diego? She is grateful. She has affection for me. And do you know why? Because I have guided her, protected her, given her a life she could never have had otherwise.”
Diego’s head spun. His mother—or the version of her he remembered—was speaking Spanish instinctively, her tone calm, affectionate toward Chase. He could feel the loyalty radiating from her, the tiny sparks of admiration, the subtle flush of something warmer, something more intimate.
Valerie moved closer to Chase almost naturally, adjusting a stray lock of hair for him. “Él… él es bueno conmigo. Siempre,” she said softly. <He is good to me. Always.>
Diego stumbled back. His fingers dug into his notebook. This is wrong. This isn’t my mother!
Chase tilted his head, voice smooth as silk. “You see, Diego… even if some memory of Valeria lingers, even if she recalls fragments, it makes no difference. She is Valerie now. Her heart, her mind… they belong here. To me. And you, hijo… you are part of the life she chooses now. You must accept it.”
Valerie’s gaze flicked briefly to Diego, a shadow of guilt crossing her face—but the pull toward Chase remained undeniable. She straightened, taking Chase’s hand in both of hers. “Sí… es verdad… yo soy Valerie,” she whispered. Her voice carried warmth, devotion, and something almost like romantic trust toward Chase.
<Yes… it's true… I'm Valerie>
Diego’s knees nearly buckled. He had almost reached her—he had almost brought back Valeria—but the very act of trying to awaken her past reinforced the barriers Chase had built: the loyalty, the affection, the intertwined identities. Every attempt to pull her free only confirmed for Valerie that Chase was her anchor, her protector, and now… something more.
