Chapter 37 by BreaktheBar BreaktheBar

What's next?

Zara comes to Visit

"What's up, you four-eyed bitch?"

"Nothing much, you fire-crotch whore," April replied with a laugh.

Zara came around to the passenger side of April's car and plopped down into the seat, slamming the door shut behind her and then leaning over the centre console and grabbing April's face with both hands, planting a big kiss on her cheek. "Mwah!"

April laughed, shaking her best friend off.

"Taking shots at my pubes is a low blow," Zara chuckled as she settled into her seat and buckled up.

"I hope so, if your pubes are bushy enough to be seen up high then I'd be concerned," April said.

That got a bark of a laugh out of Zara, and then she sighed heavily. "Fuck," she said. "Honestly, Ape, I haven't laughed like that since the last time I saw you."

"Awe, hon," April sighed, reaching over and patting her friend's thigh as she pulled out onto the street. Zara had worn Daisy Duke jean shorts that highlighted her tall, slender legs and a rough tank top that only a woman with her small bust could carry off. It was also entirely in style. "Have you considered, you know, trying to make other friends?"

"People, and I've told you this every day since we were like twelve, suck," Zara said. "The number of people who don't suck is highly limited."

April shook her head. "You know I love you, right?"

"You better," Zara smirked.

"Well then, take this with love, bitch," April said. "You need to take the stick out of your ass."

Zara paused quietly and looked out the window, which was entirely unlike her.

"Wait, hold on," April said. "What's wrong?"

"Nothing," Zara said.

"Obviously not," April said. "Speak. Use your words."

"That's just the same thing that a big photographer said to me," Zara said, her voice tight. "And he hasn't booked me since."

"Oh, Zara," April said.

"It's fine, I know you didn't mean it like that."

"No, it's not fine," April said. ''You're amazing at your job, you're absolutely gorgeous, and everyone knows it."

"Yeah, not so much," Zara grunted. "Apparently I'm... frigid. Or something. I don't do sex appeal so well all of a sudden because I look like I'm about to bite someone's head off."

"Did something change?"

"No!" Zara said. "Or, I don't know? Maybe I've stopped being able to fake it over time."

"Fake what? Sex appeal?" April asked. "You're stupidly hot. You ooze sex appeal."

"Hot and sexy are different and you know it," Zara sighed. "The photographer said I need to get laid."

"That's so inappropriate," April said immediately, getting angry for her friend.

"He wasn't suggesting himself," Zara waved her off. "And he might not be wrong. But... you know."

"I know," April grimaced. Zara's relationship with sex was tough.

"We can talk about it later," Zara said, changing the subject. "How is Mr Third Leg? Are you still seeing him or has he shown his true colours yet?"

"Yes, I'm still seeing him," April rolled her eyes. "And also yes, I've seen his true colours. They're light and bright and the colour of heaven."

"You're just in the honeymoon phase," Zara said.

"Maybe I am, but I think it'll stick around for a long time. He's fantastic."

"Am I still meeting him tomorrow?"

"Yes," April said. "He dropped what he had planned so he could meet you."

"Well, that's one point in his favour I guess," Zara grumbled. "We're not doing something super nerdy, are we?"

"Tomorrow? No," April shook her head. "Dinner, so you can interrogate him, and then bowling."

"Bowling!?" Zara groaned.

"You have fun bowling and you know it," April said.

"Fine," Zara sighed. "What are we doing now?"

"I figured mall, maybe buy a new outfit for tomorrow so we can wow him, and then dinner at my place before we sit out by the fire in the backyard?"

"You do realise there is nightlife in this city, even if it's sad compared to anywhere... fun, right?"

"Are you telling me you don't want to sit around drinking my Dad's whiskey and throwing shit on a fire?"

".... Alright, good point," Zara said. "Your Dad has good taste in whiskey. And I do like fire."

"And then on Saturday we're doing a girl's trip with Ollie's friends."

"Wh- What? Why?" Zara scoffed.

"Because all three of them are super sweet, and important to him, and are making an effort to try and include me in their circle," April said. "And when they heard you were going to be in town they wanted to try and include you too."

Zara groaned. "But people suck."

"Maybe you'll be surprised and these girls don't," April said.

Zara shot her a look. "Why do I feel like you're not telling me something?"

"Because I'm... not..."

"Where are we going on this girl's trip?"

"It's a secret," April said, unable to hide her grin. "But you should be able to wear this exact outfit and fit right in."

Zara sputtered, waving her hands in frustration, but there was no way April was spilling the beans about horses. She couldn't wait to see Zara's face.
