Andrew was exactly the kind of man you liked. Equal parts strong and kind, you could always rely on him both to treat you nicely and to ward off any jerks that ever gave you trouble. He was reasonably fit, visiting the gym once every weekend, and nicer looking than any of your past loves. His short black hair framed his face perfectly, and your friends would always kind-heartedly joke about wishing their boyfriends had his eyes: strikingly blue, and sharp, you could feel yourself melt a little whenever you met his gaze in an intimate moment.

Unfortunately, intimate moments had been few and far between these days. He'd had little time for you lately, nor you for him, work consuming both of your schedules and leaving little room for each other. Your last date had been a month ago, a modest dinner at a halfway fancy restaurant for your anniversary. You could tell he still loved you, but he no longer had the time for the little gestures he always used to make to show it. It was discouraging.

You didn't ask why things had gotten so stale, because you already knew. Andrew had been an apprentice at a workshop in the city, until his boss, an old family friend, recently retired. He'd been abruptly promoted to fill his boss' old spot, and the company hadn't gotten around to hiring a replacement or his old role yet, leaving Andrew to do all the same work he used to and then some. He was being paid better now, obviously, which helped with the apartment, but it also left him working to complete exhaustion every day. He never complained about it—he wasn't that kind of man—but you could tell the extra work wore him down.

You were a little worried about him. He worked too hard, and didn't seem to have the same joy for life as he used to when you two first started dating. Slipping silently out of bed, you placed the covers back over his sleeping body, intending to let him get some much needed sleep for a teensy while longer, while you went and made yourself presentable for the day ahead.
