Chapter 3 by 12shadesofnight 12shadesofnight

...where do you start?

Your Girlfriend's House

"Erica? I'm heading over to Monica's, okay? Call me if you need anything!" You yell in the direction of your cousin's room.

"Okay!" Comes her reply.

Your mind buzzes with anticipation as you step out of your apartment building. You can make anyone do what you want, and reality will adjust to accommodate your demands.

"Uber for Alec?"

Your thoughts are interrupted by an older gentleman addressing you from the driver's seat of his car.

"No," you reply. "But I do need to get somewhere. Would you mind driving me?"

You phrase your intentions as a question, rather than an assertive command.

"Not at all, bud," the older man nods without missing a beat. "Hop in."

Goosebumps form on your skin as you watch him so naturally accept your request. The interaction can almost be considered normal, just one man helping another, but he's willing to waste his time and money to meet your request. And he's doing it happily.

"Hey, are you my Uber?" You hear a man say, accompanied by the sound of shoes on the pavement. "I'm Alec."

"Yeah, but this man has somewhere he needs to be." The driver shrugs. "So unless you mind taking a little detour depending on where he wants to go?"

"Not at all." Alec smiles amicably at you. "I'm not in a rush or anything."

And so that's the reality-altering effect: people will adapt to your changes to the best of their ability and without thinking it strange in any way.

"What are you waiting for? Get the door," you chuckle. Alec hastily walks over and opens the passenger seat for you with a muttered apology. Grinning, you step into the vehicle. "Make sure to pay for the extra distance, alright? Shouldn't let kindness go unrepaid."

The car drives off behind you as you step up to Monica's home. At 21, she still lives with her parents. It made sense; no need to go out of state for college with Yew University so close, and her family home was spacious and spoke of respectable generational wealth.

You sigh as you admire the structure before you, thinking about your girlfriend. You've always been grateful for Monnie, who would typically be far from your league. But you've been friends since freshman year and dating by senior year- no part of you denies that how immature you both were when you met played a part in how you got together with such a remarkable woman. Yeah, you've always been grateful for her, and you're truly thankful that the relationship is still so strong.

And yet, there's no guilt as you walk up to the front door. The difference in your status always haunts you. The entire time you've been with her, there's always been this haunting fear in your mind that she'll wake up one day and decide that you're simply not good enough for her. An insecurity that she addressed a couple of times, that she now laughs off and rolls her eyes at.

'I can finally put this feeling to rest now.'

"Heh."

There's a small tug at the corners of your lips as you have that thought. Putting your insecurities aside is just one of the things you want to get done today, along with a growing list of other desires.

You wouldn't say it's on the top of the list, either.

Who answers?
