Chapter 54 by GenocideHeart
What do you do?
You want to help, but there's a small complication...
The first wave of warg riders surge against the circle of humans, whooping and taunting. Four of them leap forward and thrust their weapons at Morgent's soldiers, not a hard attack though, just probing. The soldiers easily swat aside the pointed tips of their weapons, but the goblins keep just out of range of their blades and ride away, barely giving the humans enough time to raise their weapons to intercept the strike of a second wave of riders coming at them from the opposite direction.
Getting a good look at the human riders, you can see that they all wear identical sets of armor, scaled metal pieces that overlap to form a protective curtain of steel over their bodies. Some bear shields that help in fending off the tentative passes the goblin raiders make. Overall, their position seems firm albeit dwindling, but you resolve not to waste another minute and immediately target one of warg riders approaching your position. Steeling yourself for the fight, you reach down to grab your axe.
...and grab nothing but thin air. Horrified, you remember that you had lost your sword and axe when you fought Nautilex in Elohin, and you find that there are no tools nearby that could be used as makeshift weapons. You look up from your belt and watch the fight progress, powerless to help the others.
One of the riders is struck a glancing blow and gets his helmet thrown off. The helm floats in mid-air for a second and reflects the glare of the sun into your eyes. You have to blink away for a moment, but when you turn back, you notice that the warrior who lost his headpiece is actually a beautiful woman, fighting side-by-side with the other soldiers. Her long blond hair tumbles free-flowing, swaying with the motion of her body each time she swings her sword. You wonder why there is a sharp pain in the center of your chest, but then you look at her again and then you realize why - for a single point in time, your heart stops.
Melena.
Then your heart starts to beat again. No, it isn't her, you have to remind yourself that she died with the rest of your village. You were there when it happened. But the similarities are sublime, right down to the color of her hair and the shape of her body. She could practically be Melena's twin. But Melena was never as fierce of a warrior as this woman.
The swordswoman's movements are both graceful and deadly, her sword flits back and forth in a blur, easily deflecting the passing strikes of five different goblin riders. One of her fellow comrades utters an angonizing cry and collapses from his steed, clutching a thrown spear that found its way in an exposed area of his scalemail. The female fighter moves immediately to cover the hole in their defenses, shifting slightly to the left, and somehow manages to handle her sword even faster for a time while the gap closes.
Her skillful swordplay tips the balance in favor of the humans as two wargs in another pass go down, their legs hamstrung and bleeding freely from her strikes. The goblins are quickly trampled by the horses and they leave a noticable gap in the attackers' net. One of the soldiers gives a commanding shout and they move as a cohesive unit towards that opening. It looks for a moment that the humans will break through the encircling maneuver, but then one of the goblin riders gets brave and charges headlong into Morgent's finest. He is swiftly cut down by their blades, but the little monster's aim is true, and he manages to cripple the swordwoman's horse, piercing its flank with the jagged spearhead.
Her horse bucks and flails, throwing the young woman to the ground. She grunts in pain when she hits the floor and her remaining comrades immediately swerve their horses around and scramble to protect her.
But the goblin riders smell fresh blood in the air and redouble the intensity of their attacks, tightening the circle and striking more boldly at them. Wargs leap into the air and drag down one of the soldiers to the ground, ripping and tearing against their flesh and armor, some of the wolfbeasts get cut down by the remaining soldiers as they fight to drag their comrade back into formation while at the same time protect their female companion.
With fighting raging around her, the swordswoman grabs her sword and scrambles to her feet, gritting her teeth. The fall must have sprained her ankle, because you can see her lips are ashen and she clearly favors one leg. As three of the goblin riders advance towards the woman, she holds the hilt with both hands shaking, but ready to receive. One of the goblins squats atop his steed, completely unclothed, and you can see his prick standing up in hardness as he leers lewdly at the female warrior.
