Chapter 13

Who's the next lucky lady you run into?
You take another pass at your neighbor.
After chemistry, you had another hour to spend on classes. But after that was lunch, a reprieve from the agony of academia.
You were about to god-mode your way through the packed dining hall wait lines again when you spotted Caitlyn out the corner of your eye. Seemed like she also had a break in her schedule.
Not wanting to lose track of her, you equipped your handy dandy god app and stopped everything in its place.
"Now, what to do?" you asked yourself.
You had a lot of fun with Emma earlier and wanted to invest in some kind of connection with her more, but your pre-existing friendship with Caitlyn made her perfect for fostering a new relationship. And besides, you had the power of a god now. What could stand in the way of your desires? You thought carefully about what you wanted to do, then pulled out the notepad.
"My friend Caitlyn will join me for lunch when asked, and answer any question I ask her truthfully."
A fairly straightforward command. While you could technically brute **** your way into having her, you thought a more natural approach would be more fun. After all, if a random blonde in your chemistry class got that courtesy, an actual friend should deserve it too.
You then grabbed some plates and scoped out a free table for the two of you. There, you resumed time and made your approach to the unsuspecting girl.
"John! Hey again!" she said cheerfully.
"Hi, Caitlyn." you politely greeted her. "Are you here for lunch? Because I've got a table over in the back. Care to join me?"
"Sounds great!" Caitlyn said. You wondered if the app was solely responsible for her enthusiasm. Maybe you'd find out while you ate and chatted her up.
Both you and Caitlyn set your bags down and dug in.
"I can't believe you already got a table and food. This place has been swamped for the past half hour!" she said in disbelief.
"Oh, I have my sorcerous ways." you replied, earning a small giggle from her.
The food was good, but hardly the thing on your mind.
"So, Caitlyn, how's your first day of classes going?"
It was a primer question, a test to see how she'd respond based on your tinkering.
"Well, it's okay I guess. It was good seeing a friendly face back in the dorms, but I'm worried the showers have a heating problem. The water temperature just dropped out of nowhere this morning!"
You had to hide any smirking. You knew very well what the problem in the shower was.
"Beyond that, classes are alright. Nothing too stressful yet." she continued.
"Well, that's good at least." you commented. "How's everything outside of school? Seeing anyone lately?"
A bit more invasive, but still nothing out of the ordinary.
"Well, I broke up with my boyfriend earlier this past summer. We'd been together for two years, so that kind of stung. I was kind of hoping this semester could be a fresh start for me, but I'm also worried about getting hurt again."
Even you were taken back by her answer.
"I-I'm so sorry. I.... I don't know why all that came out..." Caitlyn apologized.
"It's okay, Caitlyn. I'm sorry to hear that. Maybe you just needed to let it all air out, no judgement." you told her.
"Yeah, maybe." she muttered. "Look, I know we've known each other a while, and we haven't let things get too mushy, but thanks for being cool about it."
You made sure to come off as grateful in your response.
"No problem. I'm glad you trust me that much. Though, if not for us being such good friends, I'd think you were secretly in love with me or something."
You were joking, of course, but also curious to see if Caitlyn could be goaded into answering something rhetorical in nature.
"Ah, what am I saying?" you went on. "You couldn't possibly have a crush on little old me, would you?"
"Umm...." Caitlyn murmured.
That certainly piqued your interest.
"Caitlyn? Do you actually like me?" you whispered, trying to appeal to her situation. Maybe if she thought this was more private, she'd be more pushed to answer. The way your note was phrased left it ambiguous as to if she even needed to answer every question, or just answer truthfully when she did.
"I think you've been really nice to me, and I've considered you a good friend since freshman year. So, I think so? I don't know, it's complicated." Caitlyn spoke in a hushed tone.
The subject was clearly embarrassing her, and you more or less got what you wanted. Just one more question, then you'd wrap up the conversation.
"Wow. Uh, thanks, "Caitlyn. That couldn't have been easy to admit. Listen, if you ever need to talk, you can come to me. I won't tell anyone, I swear. And for what it's worth, I think you're pretty great too."
She was blushing now. Caitlyn soon finished eating and excused herself. She seemed a bit surprised, maybe a bit shocked, but she'd likely recover. You made a mental note to check up on her later.
So, which girl do we look for later?
