You find him out back, brooding.

"Hey jackass," you say when you step out of the back door. "I found you some gear in my brother's room."

He turns to look at you, face twisted. "Oh. Thanks." Then a pause. "So you're not done with me?"

"That depends on you, champ. If you're really committed to this Give Up and Fuck The Pain Away strategy then yes, I'm done with you." You drop the bags and sit next to him on the porch seat. "If you're willing to give it a try, then maybe I'll share my plan with you, and we can work on building some kind of a life at the end of the world."

"You have a plan?"

"Yep. And a decision to make. Are you in?"

"I guess I'm in. I'm sorry for what I said."

"Buddy, I'm much more angry about what you did."

"I know, I know. I'm sorry for that too."

"Sorry's not going to cut it when I'm fat and slow and eating for two."

"Do you really think that's going to happen?"

"Probably. I don't know if you've looked outside lately, but where exactly do you think I'll be getting birth control from? I'm 21, at peak fertility, and my reproductive system doesn't give a shit about the world around us. Anyway, it's done, so we'll just have to wait and see. Do you want to hear this plan or not?"

He nods, and you outline the main idea. You explain about knowing more or less where it is, and having the maps to get to the general vicinity. You leave out the questions for now, thinking it's best to gauge his competency before giving him an illusion of democracy in your little unit. He seems excited, finally, at the prospect of being able to take positive action, and your anger at him recedes a little when you realise that his bad mood has just been created by feeling powerless.
