You evade a direct answer. He's brought a guest

"Just a little tutoring," you reply with an easy smile. "Some students looking for extra credit." You suddenly realise he's not alone. A slender dark haired student stands just beside him, looking at you with an expression you can't quite read. "And who is this?"

"Serena Harlan. She's one of my students. She and some of her friends are having a little contest. She wanted to meet you, and asked for an introduction. So here it is. Miss Williams, this is Mr. Carter. Mr Carter, this is Miss Williams."

You shake Serena's slender hand, frowning for a moment as you search your memory.

"You're in one of my classes too. You asked for some guidance about the paper I assigned didn't you?"

"Um, hi Mr. Carter," she said nervously. "I'm feeling much better about it now, thanks to you. I didn't know biology could be so complicated!"

She shuffled in place, glancing at Brian as though she expected something from him, but he just smiled at her. Frowning slightly she stepped forward, crossing her hands in front of her as she spoke. "And, um, about that 'contest' Coach mentioned.... well, do you know Harper Morgan, or Abby Davison? They would've done a much better job explaining it than I would..."

You frown in puzzlement, your head cocked in a question.

"Why no, I can't say I do know them. I don't think they're in any of my classes. Or at least not in today's classes. Why don't you tell me about this contest that's causing you so much concern?"

"We're...." the word stretched on as Serena seemed to stall for time, before she finally blurted,".... supposed to fuck all the new teachers."

She cringed, as though waiting for you to express disgust. When it didn't immediately come, Serena kept speaking, as though defending herself. "I-I already did it with Coach Watts, but I couldn't get myself to try with the other two, so I'm still really far behind! Please, Mr. Carter, I don't want to embarrass myself!"
