Chapter 4

Which one do you attack?
You are interrupted
You decide that taking out the knight should be your first priority, she was the most experienced after all and the priestess should only be able to use fire spells. You grin as you ready your knife. Maybe I'll come out of this with more- BOOOM.
You are blasted out of your perch by a shockwave, falling heavily to the ground in a heap. Your senses take a moment to recover as you blink dazedly upwards, the world muted by the ringing in your ears. Colors swirl and morph, eventually coalescing back into shapes that made sense. Or at least they were supposed to. It was midday, why was the sun setting?
Streaks of red and yellow light color swirling dark clouds that spread to the horizon... though you were sure it wasn't even overcast when the heroes had arrived. The colors seemed to radiate out from a central point to the east, like ripples on a very angry pond, turning the sky into an evil-looking light show. Whatever the source was, it definitely wasn't the sun. Your hearing started to return about the time you realized something was very wrong and you scramble to your feet, becoming aware of a rumbling like far off thunder. Remembering your ruined ambush, you hurriedly take stock of your ambushee's.
You needn't have worried, the heroines were just as shell-shocked as you were. The priestess was flat on her back next to the fire, in a pose not unlike a very surprised kitten, and the knight was untangling herself from her blanket, "What in the nine...?" She gaped at thedarkened sky but recovered much faster than the priestess, rising to her feet and re-equipping her armor, "Come on Lisa, before your hair goes up!" She hauls her companion away from the fire, scanning the environment just as you had.
Too late, you try to take cover behind a bush, "There you are!" Shit. You are quite literally pinned between a rock and a hard place as she charges you with her shield, squishing you against a boulder, "Oof! w-wait! wait- I can-" You aren't sure what you're going to say, as a monster you didn't have a lot of leverage and you had just killed most of her party. Still, you can feel the life points being squeezed out of you and you're pleading out of desperation.
To your surprise the Priestess, Lisa, comes to your aid, "Let him up for a minute Mary, he might be able to tell us what just happened." Wheezing on your last few hit points, you nod vigorously. The knight reluctantly lets up on the pressure andou take a few deep breaths as you try to come up with a believable story, "t-th-cough-there's a-an event... th-the likes of which hasn't been seen for an age!" Your squeaky voice works to your advantage for once, you sound like a particularly eccentric quest-giver. It certainly gets the heroines attention and the priestess eyes the roiling sky with excitement, "Mary, aren't we due for an expansion?! What kind of event?"
"Uh... well... it's uh... it's better if I show you." The knight immediately moves to decapitate you, "Eep!" an undignified squeak escapes your lips, "Wait! Mary, what if we need him to properly activate it?" The knight regards you disdainfully, "He's just trying to save himself! He'll run off as soon as he's out of melee range!" You sway drunkenly, channeling your inner puppy as you simultaneously try to look as harmless and as pathetic as possible.
It must have worked because the priestess gives the knight a pouting look and she resignedly steps back, "Fine. Demon, go. Now." You suppress a grumble and make for the source of the shockwave. Idiots. Not like they need me to guide them when there's a giant freaking target painted on the sky. You meander a little, trying to draw out the time as you contemplate your method of escape. Fly straight up? Might work... didn't look like the knight had a bow and the priestess wasn't going to hurt you with fire...
Unfortunately you were already quite close to the epicenter of the explosion and all too quickly you come to the edge of the trees...
What is it?

Game Monster
From Creep to Boss
You come into being as a low-level monster, the kind heroes chew through like popcorn. You know the drill, whether you're a player yourself or an artificial intelligence, and you're sick of it. You set out on your own quest: to defeat the heroes at any cost (or at least be an epic boss somewhere down the line).
