Chapter 14
by Alexleigh
Who do you check up on next?
You and Mute... Maybe things will get hot this time?
You walk back up the stairs and reach base, then you make a turn and head down- Jesus, this is so much walking, what the hell!?
Tired, you enter into a large room. In front of you lurches a tidal wave of dirt from a gaping hole, held back only by a web of tree roots and rusted girders. There's a large half-circle desk. Immediately, you spot a couple of things that you find unusual. First of all, Mute is shirtless. Mute is rarely shirtless. That's pretty weird. Fine, not the weirdest stuff you've encountered in ruins ever, but still - it's up there. You'd say that's a pleasant surprise.
You're not going to tell him that, in case he'd find it creepy.
Oh, right, there's also a large pyre roaring in the middle of the room. threatening to consume every last bit of oxygen you need to stay alive.
"Oh shit!"
"Damn right, oh shit!" Mute yells back. "Quick throw some dirt on it!" He's currently fighting a flaming stool, slapping some sense into the fire with his shirt.
You run to the furthest, bent-girdle wall, and start digging out dirt with your hands. The effort is a nice distraction from Mute's shirtless body. He's not exactly a muscle man, but a slim, lean machine. His biceps bulging, glistening with sweat as he whips his shirt, punishing the fire. What a bad fire it is. It's been a bad, bad fire. Why, sugar, If you hadn't stopped me, my fire would have licked that log completely clean. Guess you've got to punish me now, da--
"Shiva! Dirt!" Mute yells, exasperated. "Now, please!" With a yelp, he let's go of his shirt - also on fire - waving his hand frantically in an effort to cool it down.
The desk is also on fire now. That makes three things on fire. Generally speaking, there's way more fire happening right now than anyone should be comfortable with at any given moment.
You throw a pile of dirt on...

What Remains
Humanity did a tiny apocalypse. No one really knows what happened - robot uprising, plague, maybe an invasion of weather balloons. What matters is that humanity still stubbornly lingers around earth like a drunk after closing time. You're Shiva. A twenty something girl caught between freedom and responsibility. Living your life, exploring the world with your friends or working in your father's workshop for all eternity. It shouldn't be a tough choice for most. Then again, no one else has your unique talent of intense self-loathing with an added dose of over thinking every single decision you've ever made. TW: To be added
