“Shit.” He said as we continued on. His hand moved from the back of his neck to his crotch and he adjusted. Today was one of the days Jimmy wore jeans and was I glad he did. “Oh, yeah. That’d go over nicely. ‘Hey, mom can you write me a late note for tomorrow so I can jerk off before school.’ Why didn’t I think of that?” He joked, but in my head I was screaming. Did he just say that? Do guys regularly just admit this sort of thing to friendly acquaintances? I think Jimmy took my silence and puzzled face as disturbance or something else cause he quickly followed up with a “kidding” to fill the dead air.

We reached the main entrance doors. I walked up first to grab the door and held it open, he nodded as gesture of thanks as demeanor changed going through the threshold. As if he recalled he should have nothing to do with me.

“JAMES!” The security guard bellowed out from behind his desk. Where I knew the office ladies and those types of high school faculty, Jimmy knew the security guards, most of the jocks knew the security guards and they would help them out with lateness to class if they were hanging in the halls and things of that nature. The security guard didn’t know me so I left to hurry to Janine in the front office while Jimmy talked with the guard, already forgetting our causal walk up to the school.

I hurried to the attendance window and rang the bell on the ledge. I heard a large sigh from behind the wall as Janine turned the corner. She semi perked up when she saw it was me. “Chris” she said in a calming tone. “Need a late pass? I don’t see payment, what happened?” Janine was referring to our agreement. When I skipped first and second period to go have breakfast with friends I would bring Janine a stack of rainbow pancakes so she would provide late passes and not mark me and my friends for detention. “Not one of those days, Janine. Can you give me the detention and give the next boy coming in detention too?”

She shot me a puzzled look. “If it’s what you want.” She said as she grabbed the late slip note pad. Jimmy walked into the office then and stood behind me. Janine coughed all too knowing about the song and dance she has to perform. “Christopher Decker” she said as she wrote acting like she didn’t know me. “A Senior now, correct Mr Decker?”

“Yes ma’am”

“And who’s your homeroom teacher, this year dear?”

“Mr Harris.”

“Okay, hun” Janine said as she ripped the perforated edge of the slip in one practiced motion. “Bring this to Mr Harris and he’ll give you the detention slip for later today. Try to wake up earlier or have mom write a note next time.”

“Thanks” I said back to her as I turned on my heel holding the slip with Jimmy behind me. “Why didn’t I think of that” I said in his direction as I started to leave the office. He held in a giggle and looked down at his feet.
