You Insisted on Confronting Him

Back when you’d first learned about the way he was treating her, you’d strongly suggested that she allow you to intervene. You were her protector, and had been since that all-important day at St. Primrose. Kaori could bring you with her to work one day. Then, you’d take him aside and remind him to keep his distance. {if Female = true}Surely, that would get the message across that she played for the other team.{endif} You knew there was no prospect of Kaori trying to stand up for herself.

Kaori was aghast at the prospect of such a direct intervention though. Aside from some boundary issues, she actually rather liked her boss. If you stormed in to confront him, it would just earn his ire.

The truth was, there were actually benefits to this situation. She got far nicer treatment than the rest of the team, which meant less anxiety at work. She often felt like he went out of his way to accommodate her. She had good reason to fear that she might not enjoy the same level of comfort in the workplace if you started a fight with her boss. {if **** = false}He didn’t seem the vengeful type, but she couldn’t be sure.{endif}

As much as it had rankled you, you eventually gave into her pleading. You insisted that she come to you if he ever tried to go past flirtation. She readily agreed, mostly happy to have prevented you from having a meltdown aimed at her boss.{if **** = true}

(****) Even at the time, you regretted letting her anxious conflict avoidance sway you so easily. Later, when you learned the dark depths of his intentions, you berated yourself for compromising. You’d known she was in danger and hadn’t done anything to stop it.{endif}
