You’re going to help Dani win back Matt

“Hey, how are you doing?” you ask Dani, giving her shoulder a small nudge.

She looks up at you, shaking her head.

“He hates me,” she says, burying her face in her hands. “It’s over.”

“I’m sure Matt will come back once you explain it to him,” you say, trying to sound reassuring. “He likes you, I can tell.”

“He just ran away!” Dani says, her voice breaking in the middle of the sentence. She’s struggling to keep the tears out of her eyes. “There’s no way he doesn’t hate me. I know it.”

“He doesn’t hate you,” you say, hugging her closer to you. “Matt only reacted that way because he cares about you, Dani. Give it some time, tell him that you and I aren’t seeing each other anymore…” You pause, realising the finality of what you just said, and forge on anyways. “And tell him that you didn’t know he was into you—”

“Because he’s not,” Dani says, sucking in a deep breath afterwards. “He’s not into me!””

“Give it time,” you say gently. “I’m sure it’ll work out.”

She leans her head against your shoulder and sighs, her shoulders slumping downwards. You sit there on the bench for minutes, watching the bikers and joggers pass through the trail. Dani makes sure to glare at all the happy couples who walk by, something that you can’t help but snort at the third time it happens.

“What?” she pouts, folding her arms over her chest.

You just shake your head with a small smile and lightly stroke her hair, letting her get the emotions out of her system. She rolls her eyes and leans back against you, and a couple minutes more go by.

“Yeah, I was being pretty dumb,” she says. “You’re right, I think. Matt was definitely into me. But I’m not so sure about that anymore…”

“Feelings like that don’t just go away. He’ll still be there for you,” you say confidently. “Our plan worked. We made him jealous, maybe even made him like you more… but now you’ve got to show him that you’re serious.”

“But he thinks I’m into you,” she says, giving your chest a playful push.

“So you’ll have to win him back,” you say. “We need to come up with a grand gesture. Something to show that you well and truly really only want him.”

“Yeah,” she nods thoughtfully. “Yeah, something big…”
