You've been spotted

Your father notices you and calls you over. “John! Come in. We were just talking about you.”

Taking a deep breath, you walk into the living room, sitting down in a recliner so that you face your parents on the couch but can still see Dr. Balkin in the other recliner out of the corner of your eye. You reach to the tray on the coffee table in front of you and make yourself a cup of coffee, hoping the warm caffeine will steady your nerves.

“Dr. Balkin was just telling us how much she enjoys having you in her class and her Journalists club. She’s been very impressed by the quality of work you’ve been handing in,” your mother beams at you as she reaches over to pat your knee. You smile at her and take a drink, as much to hide the look on your face as to steady your nerves.

Dr. Balkin turns towards you and smiles innocently. “John has a very good eye for photography and videography. Which brings me to the reason I’m here.” She uncrosses her legs and sets her coffee cup down on the tray as she looks at your parents. “I know this is a bit unprecedented, but there is a journalist workshop this weekend here in town. I was on my way to attend when I though this would be a wonderful opportunity for John and a couple of my other students to pick up some new skills. I know it’s short notice, but if you’re interested this would be a great chance for you.” Her smile widens as her eyes meet yours.

Before you can answer, your mother responds for you. “John, you really should go. I’ll take care of your dirty laundry and get your belongings ready to go back on Sunday night.” Your father nods, indicating his approval as well.
