Chapter 16
by

Reality changes... Or does it?
You're pretty sure something must be different.
Oh God, she's started drinking from the can! You've got to reach her and stop her, and maybe you won't forget about Sully. You need to remember him or you'll never be able to get him back and he'll be gone forever! You need to—
Blink.
You finally reach Sally, but it's too late. Already you're not sure why it was so important that she not drink the can. After all, it's not like it's changed her at all, is it? Sally in her frilly skirt and stockings and pink sneakers, with her adorable fluffy cardigan and impeccable makeup.
No, wait, something's changed, definitely. It must have, right? That must have been why you were trying to stop her from drinking... Is it? No... the main difference must be memories. As you interrogate them, some of them don't make sense. You made a drink for Pearl that would change her, but Sally snatched it away and drank it... And then came out like this, entirely unchanged? And then you both stayed behind to fool around with a Juicer that had done nothing up to that point but turn Pearl pink?
And if Sally had always been this way, what reason would there be to try to prevent her from drinking? But what's changed about her? What's changed about your memories? What even have you forgotten?
"Chasey-bunny?" Sally asks tentatively, using the pet name she always tries when you're upset about something.
"Don't you 'Chasey-bunny' me, babe!" you snap. "You... You did something you knew I wouldn't like, and you made us both forget what it was! How could you?"
Sally at least has the decency to look abashed. "I don't know, Chasey-bun, I'm sorry. All I know is it must have been really important if I wanted us both to forget." She sidles up to you and rests her head against your chest. You fight the instinct to hold her close against your chest. You're upset, dammit! She looks up at you, eyes wide and afraid and innocent. "Besides, if we don't know what it was about, what's the point in being upset? It's not like we can do anything to about it now, right?"
You sigh in exasperation, but she does make a point. "Babe," you say unhappily, "you might be able to use those pretty eyes to manipulate every man alive, but not me. I know you too well, and just smiling up at me isn't going to make me stop being upset."
"I'll make it right, Chasey-bun," Sally says, snuggling deeper into your chest. "and we'll work past it. Together. Like we always do."
Despite your stern words about being above manipulation, you feel your anger melt away. She may have betrayed your trust, but it's hard to be really upset about it when you don't even know what that betrayal even entailed. Besides, it's not like the girl in front of you is the same as the one who did it, she's just as clueless about why her past self would try to do whatever it is she did.
"We'll work past it," you say finally, your arm reaching out to hold her against your chest.
The tension leaves Sally as your arm wraps around her, and she gives a deep sigh. "I love you, Chasey."
A small smile escapes onto your lips. "I love you too, Sally."
