Chapter 12
by Cham3leon
Where do you go from there?
You're not the only mutant...
You're cuddling with Amy and Cassy at the back of Spanish class, Casablanca playing on the projector, when suddenly there's a knock on the door. As a precaution, you separate from your girlfriends, before nodding to Miss Rodriguez to let them in.
"Sorry to disturb you all," says your department head, stepping inside, "but we have a surprise visit from a government representative, and they want to give an assembly to the school. They'll be here in ten minutes, and apparently it is quite urgent, so you need to go to the assembly hall right away."
Grumbling about the interruption of the movie, the class file out. You follow them into the assembly hall, wondering what this could all be about, Amy rubbing your member through your trousers. Worries start to spring up in your mind - was someone resistant to your pheromones? You could swear you never made any mistakes, prevented any school visitors from seeing you in action. The moment the last guy enters the hall, a thin-lipped lady in her mid-fifties marches towards the microphone, whilst a plainly dressed girl who looks around your age hovers offstage.
“Good afternoon,” says the woman crisply. “You are here because of a recent momentous discovery that affects every one of you. Before I start, may I say that, in all likelihood, none of you here will have been directly affected by this event. However, all of you will soon see the world begin to change.
“I am afraid I am a blunt woman; I will say this as it is. Nineteen years ago, we detected a powerful radiation burst from a rare neutron supernova; the first and only one known to exist. Fortunately, our studies showed this new type of radiation was not harmful to humans, life on Earth, or our technology. So, lacking further data, we dropped these lines of research. Until one year ago, that is, where several unprecedented cases drew our attention. Upon investigation, we discovered that the radiation eighteen years ago did have an effect on foetuses in the womb.”
You turn to Amy in surprise, as mumbling breaks out across the hall. The woman gives a small smile.
“I am, of course, talking about the 79% of you who were foetuses at that time. The radiation disrupted your DNA, resulting in multiple mutations. 99 in 100 of you will have the same genes as when you were conceived, as only your defunct DNA will have been affected, and other mutations will be neutral or corrected. However, the other 1% is quite a different story.
“These mutations are seemingly unconnected, except that they are nothing like any naturally evolved genes. Some of them are tiny mutations, leading to someone having an extra vein coming from the brain. Others are obvious to the eye – a boy who developed fluorescent green hair springs to mind. The effects of these mutations seem to develop during puberty; at your age, we believe any transformations that would have happened are now complete.”
“In a few, cases, I must sadly report that these mutations can also lead to cancerous tumours, which is why you will all be screened for cancer. This won’t tell us or you whether you have been influenced by the radiation in any way, but will help us to cure any cases we find. They fortunately seem to be mostly non-aggressive, at least as far as our information shows.”
Talking begins to erupt, but the government lady stamps it out.
“You will all have time to process this. I know it is a lot to take in right now, but whilst I have your attention, I must inform you about an even rarer type of mutation. The one percent of the one percent, if you will. This is what will reshape the world – but it’d be better if Rachel told you about it. Rachel?”
The 5’5” young woman who has been waiting behind steps forwards, entering the light. You can immediately see she's gorgeous – silky black hair, symmetrical face, sexy body – and unlike Lauren, when Rachel speaks she is cheerful and clearly a little nervous.
“Hi guys! I’m Rachel – er, obviously. Anyway, I’m here because I have the rare kind of mutation Dr Jones was just talking about. People like me – we can do things that… that ordinary people can’t. Four years ago, I thought it was impossible, but now…” she gives a shaky laugh, then composes herself and leans closer to the mic. “We have powers,” she whispers excitedly, then straightens out again. “That’s not how the doctors and scientists would put it, but yeah. A bit like superhero movies and that kind of stuff. We have, and I quote ‘abilities or strengths that surpass those of most humanity’.”
The audience immediately begins chattering wildly, but one shout rises above the others.
“What can you do?”
Rachel smiles. “I have telekinesis – meaning I can lift about 200 kilos with just my mind, including my own body. Can I show them?”
Her chaperone nods stiffly, and Rachel beams. In an instant, her feet effortlessly float off the ground, until her entire body is suspended in the air. The audience give a collective gasp, staring at this impossible act for several seconds. Then a huge round of applause rocks the room.
With everyone on their feet, standing on tip-toe to get a better look as Rachel levitates the podium, your thoughts are otherwise occupied. This explains your pheromones! But you soon realise the government woman is right: this will completely change the world. If even a few people have superpowers, imagine what could happen to crime. Wars. Terrorism. They could all be shut down for good.
…Or continue the same, just super-powered, a nagging voice in your head warns.
When the teachers finally managed to quiet your year group, the grey lady has retaken the stage from Rachel.
“By the time this assembly has finished, a news story will have broadcast this discovery internationally. Now, however, you’ll be taking a genetic test to screen for any diseases, predicted or not, the foetal radiation may have caused. If any of you already know that you are amongst the minority who have a genetic enhancement, please let me know, or call the hotline that will be publicised. Rachel, and everyone like her, will be given therapy and potentially training, to learn how to live and how to best contribute to society with their new abilities.”
As she continues to explain the details of the tests, you gazed at Rachel. Her pink T-shirt and cardigan clearly outline the smooth curves of her breasts and small waist. She is the perfect girl-next-door, only made hotter by her incredible abilities. As you watch, she turns and locks eyes with you. You hold her gaze for several seconds, before someone stands up between you.
What now?
