Chapter 62

Shandy
What impression do you make?
You're a tough guy
Pointing at the dark-haired student who mimed a yawn when Diana was speaking you invite her to join you.
"Do you mind helping me out?" With a triumphant grin she hops to her feet and saunters past the room to the front. Her dark hair is in French braids and with her height and broad shoulders (for a girl) mark her perhaps as an athlete, maybe a forward on the basketball team and a power hitter in softball. She smiles at you with excitement as you gently turn her around so she is facing her peers.
"Before we get started on the policy changes I'd like to go over a few thing about the uniform. What's your name?"
"Margot Childers, it's a pleasure to make your acquaintance, Dean Hawkfeather." The phrase rolls easily off her full lips, clearly this is something she's been trained to say all her life, but it is still nice.
"Why thank you, Miss Childers, it's a pleasure to be here." Turning to the group of students you point to Margot. "Miss Childers here is wearing her school jacket, pink blouse and pleated skirt. You point to the white knee-high socks and black pumps. "Notice as well that she is not wearing sneakers and her socks are pulled up above her calves." Margot does a mini bow and her friends applaud. "Really, I have only one issue with your appearance, Miss Childers." She sees your gaze rest on her tie and she covers it with a neatly manicured hand. "That's right Miss Childers, your tie. Please remove it and give it to me." Margot shakes her head steps away.
"You don't know what I had to do to get this tie Mr. Hawkfeather." A round of laughter rolls through the library, but you ignore the hollers and remind the student that she is out of uniform and must remove it. She doesn't budge in her defiant air. With a nod you gesture for her to return to her seat, she smiles knowingly and turns her back on you. You've been trained in almost a dozen different techniques to take out a man from this position, but instead of anything deadly you grab the back of her tie, and before she even feels the loop tighten around her neck slice through the tie with the very sharp scissors you had pocketed from the librarian's desk. There is a gasp of surprise when you step back a second later holding Margot's tie in your hand.
"Ladies," you raise your voice up another notch, "If you are out of uniform, I will ask you once to fix the issue. If I'm in a good mood, I'll ask you twice. I will not ever ask you a third time." Now, if you are wearing a non-uniform article of clothing, I'd advise you to remove it now." Handing the ruined tie back to Margot you send the stunned girl back to her seat.
"I believe in following the rules as they are written." The library is as quiet as it has been since you entered it. "Before you leave today you will receive a copy of the consequences of various infractions as set out by the Academy's Code of Conduct. I suggest you pay attention to the rules."
There is a murmur in the room as the other students whisper to each other. You hear some mutters from teachers as well, some clearly approvingly like Monica Fulton, while others like Alice and Miss Swanson clearly disapproving.
"I trust this makes it clear what the disciplinary policies of the Pink Rose are." The stunned silence is as good an answer as any you could hope for. "I advise you to familiarize yourselves with the Code of Conduct and the schedule of penalties listed in it." You nod to Dianna and return to your seat.
"Ladies, you have heard the policy. Copies of the Code of Conduct are here and you can pick one up on your way out." For no rational reason you feel a rush of warmth when you hear Diana back you up like that, as you look around the room you miss a little of what she is saying. "...feather's statements. Familiarize yourself with the rules, and govern yourselves accordingly." She stares at the assembled group of students daring them to challenge her, and after letting the silence build she clears her throat and softens her tone as she turns to less charged topics.
As Diana reminds the students about the upcoming dance with Hamilton, the student auction that Miss Considine is so riled up about, the students slowly relax. There is some giggling at the mention of the social, and even more when she reminds students who want to participate in the auction that they must submit their skill-sheet and pictures by the end of the week.
The meeting ends with a few details about an upcoming parent open house and a few other administrative details. At their dismissal though, it is clear that the students have two things on their minds - dress code and paddling. As they file out of the library you see a good number of students studying you carefully, clearly trying to gage how much of a change you are really going to bring to the Pink Rose.
