Chapter 5 by Manbear Manbear

Do you want help, or is this too personal?

You'll start on your own

You decide to at least scout out Orestes' house on your own. Some of the more connected citizens of the city were able to get invitations to wait out the siege in the citadel. If Orestes abandoned his house, it shouldn't be as hard to break into and there won't be as much loot there to share. On the other hand, if Orestes is holed up in his mansion with a dozen mercenaries, then one or two helpers won't make any difference.

It takes much longer to get across town than you thought it would. The streets aren't crowded, in fact they are much emptier than usual. A few worried merchants scurrying like rats for cover when their nest is unearthed. Several times you spotted a whole family dragging a cart loaded with all their valuables heading deeper into the city away from the breached walls. Of course, these didn't slow you down but with the disruption to the social order, the well understood rules of where different gang's territories started and stopped no longer were honored. There was no such thing as safe ground, and as an attractive woman moving alone through the city you were accosted several times.

Twice you were able to run from the men. You knew every alley, every hole in a fence and every crumbled section of wall that you can climb, but each time you ran with her heart thudding in your chest. Since it became apparent that the city walls would fall people started fixing those holes and crumbled sections of wall everything you know about the city was uncertain.

One time you knew the leader of the gang (they called themselves a security patrol, but no-one felt secure when they were around) more importantly, the leader recognized you and remembered how quickly your knives had cut into the former leader of this gang. As attractive a target as you were, he knew that you were much too much trouble.

The last two men had not been so lucky. You had run right into one of the men and his thick arms wrapped tightly around you, the smell of old sweat and garlic made you want to vomit. The man was disgusting.

"Looks like we caught ourselves a spy." He told his smaller companion, "Let's find a quiet room where we can search and question her." His sidekick laughed so hard at this crude attempt at humor that he completely missed the blades that flashed into your hands and then under the ribs of your captor and up into his lungs. The burly man fell to his knees coughing up scarlet blood as you slid out of his grasp and when his face hit the paving stone at his friend's feet as you turned to look at the suddenly nervous man.

"Go hide in the deepest shit hole you can find." You tell him as you clean and sheath your blades "If the Hellscum find you they will kill you as dead as your fat friend here." You do not know if he took your advice or not, but he seemed to be in a hurry as he took off down the street.

A quick search of the dead man turned up a handful of coins, a necklace and a couple rings that were much too small for the man's sausage fingers. In general, you prefer to leave killing to others, but the city is better off with this thug dead.

Do you get to Orestes without any more trouble?
