Reassure her?
Yes
“Don’t worry, no one saw," I lied easily, adding a sugary sweetness to the sentence I delivered. "But you need to fix that, though." And for some inexplicable reason – possibly to assuage my own conscience – and partially because of Chloe's apparent guilt; I ended up helping her adjust the bra strap, pulling it tighter than she would have worn herself. It was almost too tight - straining slightly.
“Thanks,” she muttered, still slightly flustered. She stepped back out into the sunlight, smoothing down her top with a forced smile. “You’re always looking out for me.”
My heart skipped a beat, and I immediately regretted the lie that had left my mouth - too much tenderness was an unusual departure from my typical detached demeanor. Was she truly oblivious, or did she sense something more beneath my surface?
I quickly changed tactics to appear casual and dismissive. "Don't be silly," I said, a touch of frost creeping into my voice. “Just… try to pay attention next time." The words weren’t meant as genuine criticism but they served their purpose—to distance myself from the moment’s vulnerability.
Then, with an almost casual air I added: "You know, it's probably for the best that we caught it before anyone saw." It was a subtle warning - both to Chloe and perhaps even a playful taunt towards those teenagers lingering at the exit. And another wave of guilt rippled through me – I am exploiting her innocence, turning her naivety into some form of sick game…
I stole a glance at Chloe’s face, searching for any sign of understanding—or suspicion - only to see that it was still masked by a familiar sense of carefree obliviousness. The feeling of both guilt and... perverse triumph lingered as we continued out through the crowds.
