My wife lets her in and she joins us both in the living room. Martha is still wearing a maid outfit, but it’s a different one from what she wore at the party.

“So, Martha, let’s discuss you changing my husband’s diapers,” Macy says, with a bit of spite.

“Just like I said on the phone,” Martha says, “I apologize for that. It was wrong of me to suggest to your husband that he call me. I’m sorry.”

“It’s forgiven,” Macy says, “And as you can see he’s not really my husband anymore she’s more like my daughter. A daughter I can’t take care of when I’m at work.”

“I understand,” Martha says, “You want me to take care of her while you work. I’d be glad to. I no longer have my old job, I’m now just a full-time maid to the point that I don’t feel comfortable unless I’m wearing a maid outfit.”

“I’m glad you understand,” Macy says, “I’m willing to pay you a very fair wage for taking care of Deedee here during the week and maybe on the weekend if I need to do some errands.”

“I accept,” Martha says.

“By the way,” Macy says, “How are things?”

“You mean after what happened?” Martha says, “It’s mostly calmed down. You’d be surprised how quickly people adapt to something strange when it’s the new normal.”

They start talking about business and how much Macy will pay Martha, but I tune it out, it’s not really my problem.
