Chapter 8 by Decadent Empire Decadent Empire

Do you let her tag along?

Yes

One extra person shouldn't make too much of a difference, and she might actually end up being valuable. Besides, at least it will give you something nice to look at. "Fine. Just make sure you keep up." Amelia flashes you a brilliant smile and your team of four heads for the door. Allen peeks outside and gives you the thumbs up, signalling the coast is clear. You carefully make your way out onto the street, headed for Jeremy's SUV. You hop into the passenger seat and wait for him to start the car, hoping that it will still start after two weeks of sitting idle. After a few seconds, there is an almost audible sigh of relief when the vehicle clicks over and starts. Of course, the sound of a running car is pretty out of place these days.

"Keep your eyes peeled for anyone or anything that can hear us." Allen nods and Amelia gives you a thumbs up and scan the surrounding area while Jeremy drives toward the gas station. The streets are devoid of human activity, with animals scurrying across the road. There are broken down and destroyed cars in the street, making it difficult to pick your way through. There are other signs of the recent calamity as well. Many of the storefronts have broken windows and there are even still a few buildings still smoldering.

When he comes to a complete stop at a stop sign, the entire car turns to look at him. He gives you a sheepish grin. "Sorry. **** of habit." Amelia rolls her eyes as the three of you return to looking out. Jeremy shakes his head. "Crazy to think that all those years of following traffic laws doesn't mean anything anymore."

Amelia speaks up, "No more speeding tickets."

You chuckle. "Like there is any way a girl like you has ever gotten a speeding ticket." Amelia replies by batting her eyelashes at you and everyone laughs. You can feel the tension lessen in the SUV even as everyone stays on high alert. The car pulls into the gas station parking lot, and Jeremy purposefully makes sure to park between the lines. You get out of the car, holding your gun at the ready, trying to catch any kind of movement. You can hear your heart beating in your chest and a quick scan of your team shows that even the calm, collected Allen is nervous.

With nobody willing to make the first move, you take point, pushing open the door and peeking inside. No sings of movement. The store has been pilfered before, with cans and other merchandise scattered on the ground. You wave up the other three and whisper to them, "We check the aisles one by one, alright?" They nod. "Let's go." You push open the door and enter. You are keyed in to every little noise as you peek around the corner of an aisle. You slowly make your way down, checking every possible hiding spot. You can finally breathe a sigh of relief when you get to the end of the asile and see your teamates, having found nothing. "Looks clear. Time to get to work."

Locating the underground tank doesn't take long, though as soon as you do, you realize something. You have no idea how you're supposed to get gas out of it. The four of you stand around the hole that leads to the underground tank and just stare down into it. You have plenty of gas cans from inside the store to store it in, but no way of actually getting it out. Eventually, Allen speaks up, "I saw some hose in the store. Maybe we could make a siphon."

"Better than nothing. Let's give it a shot." Allen goes back into the store to get the hose while the rest of you stand guard. He cuts off a length of hose and lowers it into the hole, reaching the reserve of gasoline. "Now we just need someone to suck it out."

Amelia pipes up, "I'll do it." Everyone once again turns to stare at her. "Oh, come on, seriously?" She says, while blushing. Amelia grabs the hose and starts sucking before anyone can say anything else. You have to admit, it is slightly erotic watching her put her mouth on the hose. The rest of you stand guard, all of you occasionally sneaking glances at her. She pretends not to notice and focuses on her work. Finally, you hear her gag and turn to see her spit out a mouthful of gasoline. The siphon is now working and Jeremy grabs the first can and starts filling it up.

"Allen, you help him fill the containers and take them to the car. Amelia and I will be on lookout." He slings his shotgun on his back and helps Jeremy. You look around for the best place to pull security when you notice a ladder up to the flat rooftop of the gas station. "We will be able to see anything coming from up there."

"Good idea," she replies. She climbs up the ladder, giving you a great view of her bouncy ass from below before following her up. "Did you guys really think that was sexual?"

You laugh. "A little bit."

She frowns. "Even when I got a mouthful of gas?"

"I thought that was the hottest part." Amelia rolls her eyes and turns to look out at the city, but you can tell she is secretly pleased. As you guys keep watch on the quiet city streets, the silence starts to get to you a little bit. You had plenty of solitude the last couple of weeks, so you decide to get to know her a bit better. "So Amelia, what made you want to come out here with us?"

"I told you, I wanted to be useful and I know I can shoot."

"That's it?"

"Well, maybe not the whole reason." She sighs. "I don't know. Maybe things with Nick haven't been so great recently." You stay silent, and after a few moments she starts talking again. "I thought things would be different. My mom always told me that I should date for fun and marry for security. And I did think Nick was a sweet guy."

"And pretty well off, too."

"I won't lie. That did have something to do with it. And it's not like I was unhappy. But when all this happened," she gestures at the wrecked cars and broken glass, "it made me really look at what kind of man I married. He was so scared. I ended up having to take care of him instead of the other way around." She glances back at you, her face a bit red. "I'm sorry, was that too much?"

"No, no, it's fine. You can talk to me if you want."

She smiles. "I appreciate it. Haven't had many people to talk to since all this went down."

"Don't worry about it. I think we all need to vent sometimes." You spot Jeremy waving at you. "I think they are done. Let's go." You descend the ladder with Amelia not far behind.

"We filled every container we could find, and filled the rest of the trunk with water bottles and whatever food we could find."

"Smart thinking," you tell him. "Let's hit the road. Nobody has seen us so far and I would like to keep it that way." With one final scan of your surroundings, you get into the car and speed off, headed for home. The drive had barely begun before you spot something ahead that makes you yell, Pull over!" Jeremy quickly veers off the road and comes to a stop as you have to decide how to deal with this situation.

What did you see in the road?
