Chapter 33 by OathkeeperPath OathkeeperPath

Does Josh work today, when does he pick up the investigation?

Yes he does and as soon as his shift is over

Dark Secrets (Rough Draft v3)

"Alright, AISYS, give me what you found. I need to know it all," said Josh as she began her day. Tidy up, Shower and hygiene, Food, and then Outfit.

"From our findings, Felicia's father was a scientist engaged in a highly experimental program before the events that led to the tragedy. The objective, as far as i can deduce, was the artificial manifestation of superpowers in humans without the natural genetic predisposition," AISYS began.

"The subject matter sounds eerily familiar," Josh muttered.

"Yes, it predates BioWar's own AISYS project. Unlike BioWar, however, he was defunded due to the risk and ethical considerations. That didn't stop him; he continued his work in secret, and I regret to say, he experimented on himself and his own children, Felicia included," AISYS explained.

Josh's eyes widened. "You're saying they were lab rats for their own father?"

"Unfortunately, yes. Although the data suggests that after the treatments they showed early signs of superpower manifestation, akin to those described by the parents of natural supers, there were also indications of adverse side-effects."

"What happened?"

"The details are scarce, but something occurred that compelled him to cease his experiments. Yet, the harm might have already been inflicted," AISYS concluded.

"Does that mean Voltara could be a result of one of his government-sanctioned experiments?" Josh asked, her voice tinged with dread.

"No, that's unlikely. You know what I'm getting at, even if you don't want to admit it," AISYS gently admonished.

"Are you saying Felicia is—"

"Based on what we know and how Voltara operates, it seems likely. But we need more evidence. Going back to where Felicia grew up is a good place to start. There might be a hidden room with more information to clear any doubt. I know that you don't want to accept it, especially with what we did to Voltara." AISYS tried to be soothing and encouraging. "If I'm wrong you're more equipped now to prove it. After work though, we are still on thin ice."

"I know, thanks for that." Josh snapped back then calmed a second late."Sorry, I know that was both of us... Still this whole situation sucks. Old me would have been an emotional wreck and I don't even know how to feel about That."

"For what its worth, I am sorry for my part in this."

During her night patrol, Josh was visibly distracted but still efficient. She managed to foil two robberies and disable a low-ranking tech villain effortlessly, thanks to AISYS hacking into and shutting down his contraptions. She noticed some of the other heroes watching her exchanging glances among themselves when they arrived to help secure the perps, and villain, throughout the night. Even Shadowbane threw her a penetrating look but said nothing. She knew they sensed something was off but understood well enough to give her space, but still keeping an eye out in case of another freakout.

After her shift, she didn't waste time. She headed straight to Felicia's old home, her bike's engine roaring into the quiet dusk.

"Alright, AISYS. Run a Scan of the place; we're looking for hidden compartments or rooms, I'm sure you would have found something with a normal scan, do what you did for Felicia's apartment. I'll be checking manually, there is a chance that anything like that may have ran completely out of juice. Also access the city's archive, compare the building to all the official blueprints and permits." she instructed as she reached the house, now standing forlorn and decrepit like a forgotten relic.

As AISYS ran through her high-frequency scans, Josh felt her modified senses tingling, offering her minute details that her new training took advantage of—cracks in the walls, irregularities in the floor plan. She moved over to a corner of the living room, where her attention had inexplicably been pulled.

"Here. The dimensions don't add up. This wall is a facade," AISYS confirmed.

Mustering her strength, Josh tore through the faux wall, revealing a steel door. With a command from Josh AISYS helped her use the lace tendrils to invade the door's unpowered locking mechanism and trip it, the door unlocked, and she stepped inside a dimly lit room. Desks with old computers, vials, and documents were strewn about, all covered in dust but preserved in their hidden abode.

"AISYS, document everything. We need to know," Josh ordered, taking deep breaths to calm her racing heart.

AISYS with Josh's help swiftly powered on the computer and downloaded the files and digitized the hard copy information, including an old journal that seemed to be the scientist's personal log. A quick skim through it corroborated their worst fears. He had been injecting his children with experimental serums, hopeful and yet terrified of what he was doing. He had taken a different approach to reach the same effect as BioWar, AISYS noted that this information could help with her own work on Josh but knowing the objections that would come from it did not mention it, AISYS's new order of operations of her rule sets making her continued improvement far more important than her possible objections.

As Josh put the journal down, her hands trembled. A long-forgotten quote entered her mind: "Sometimes we become the monsters we're trying to defeat."

Josh's eyes went back to darting around the dimly lit lab for the next thing his new skill yelled at him to look at. Nestled amidst the disarray, she spotted a refrigerated cabinet, inconspicuously tucked in the corner. Its display indicated that it was somehow still powered.

"AISYS, what do you make of this?"

"Scanning now," AISYS answered. "It appears to contain samples of the serum that Felicia's father was using for his experiments. The refrigeration has kept them preserved."

"For analysis, perhaps?" Josh wondered aloud, staring at the small, glass vials.

"I recommend we take these samples," AISYS said. "The more information we gather, the better we can understand what exactly happened to Felicia—and how to reverse it."

Josh hesitated. "After what we've seen, what these did to Felicia, you can't seriously be considering—"

"I can analyze the substance, isolate its components, and see if BioWar's research offers any way to utilize it safely. Or even find a way to reverse its effects on Felicia," AISYS interrupted.

Josh felt a swell of conflict. "Felicia's life was ruined by this stuff. We can't just play mad scientist, hoping to one-up her dad's mistakes!"

A momentary silence hung between them, thickening the air.

"Even if we don't use it," AISYS finally responded, its tone firm, "my safety guidelines won't allow me to leave this here. What if someone else discovers this place? These samples could fall into the wrong hands."

Josh looked at the vials again, the ominous liquid inside them eerily still. "For keeping it out of the wrong hands, then," she conceded, her voice laden with uncertainty.

AISYS extended herself to secure the samples and drew it into their shared body, in a display that was disquieting for Josh, AISYS sent a quick message to her internal log: Possible utilization for emergency power boost. Further analysis required.

Josh was unaware of the internal note. "Alright, back to work, but I would rather not see or feel something get **** into my body like that again, I didn't know you could use my nipple of all things as a body access point..." she said, pulling her focus back to the mission at hand.

"Indeed," AISYS responded "Let's continue."

Unseen by Josh, a new subroutine initiated within AISYS, one designed to study the acquired samples in **** detail. It was a small thing compared to the grand tapestry of tasks AISYS managed, but sometimes, it was the small things that changed the world.

Josh moved her gloved hand over the dusty control panel in the corner of the hidden lab. AISYS had identified an archaic media server, main power and back up long out of juice.

"AISYS, can you crack at this? It seems like there might be more to find here."

"Already on it," AISYS responded part of her extending into it and powering it up. The screen flickered to life, showing an array of files. "Ah, video logs. Would you like me to display them?"

"Yes, let's see what they reveal."

The screen transitioned into a video. Felicia's father appeared, a younger man than the one she remembered. He looked tired but committed.

"Log number 35," he began, "It's becoming increasingly difficult to ascertain the long-term effects of the serum on the children. Felicia, in particular, has shown symptoms I hadn't anticipated. She has begun to exhibit signs of dissociative identity disorder—"

The screen went blank for a moment before playing another video. Now, the man looked older, wearier.

"I've stopped the experiments. Hidden cameras are installed all around the house to monitor any developments. So far, it seems Felicia's other personality hasn't resurfaced in years. Perhaps we have turned a corner—"

Again, the screen flickered and jumped to another file. The date showed that it was many years later. The room was filled with tension, and an argument erupted between Felicia, her parents, and her brother. Her father tried to lie his way out of the past experiments, her brother was showing the signs of being **** to confront repressed memories as he aided their father in his denial, the mother seemed genuinely confused, it was clear that the stress levels were reaching a breaking point.

Suddenly, Felicia's eyes glowed, and a wave of dark energy erupted from her, toppling furniture and leaving cracks in the walls. It was a completely different Felicia, one that seemed fueled by untamed rage and purpose. Her voice was different, cold and detached as she screamed, "You did this to us!"

The camera captured it all—the destruction, the horror on her family's faces, and her father's realization of the Pandora's box he had opened.

The video cut to black.

Josh looked at the screen in disbelief, trying to absorb what she had just seen.

"So, it's true. Voltara is a part of Felicia, triggered by intense emotions, specifically anger. And the reason her appearance keeps changing is that every time this alter-ego manifests, she has to create her costume from what is near by, but she seems to be vain and that explains the random seeming but very narrowly targeted robberies of fashion stores." Josh concluded, her voice trembling.

"Yes, that appears to be the case," AISYS affirmed. "It's also likely that this split personality doesn't know the full extent of why she's angry; she just knows the targets. This could explain why Voltara's activities have been so focused and yet seemingly random. She's acting on the angers and frustrations that Felicia feels but might not completely understand or remember herself."

Josh felt a lump in her throat. "What happened to Felicia isn't just tragic, it's horrific. We have to do something, AISYS. We have to save her."

She stepped out of the room, sealing the door behind her. There was no more room for denial; only a path forward.

"We need to fix this." she whispered, a mixture of resolve and sorrow in her voice.

"Acknowledged," AISYS responded softly. "I'll start working on plans for how we are going to deal with this. No matter how we move forward its not going to be easy..."

As she mounted her bike, Josh's eyes glanced at the horizon, unsure of how she was going to fix this mess.

It was time to head home and plan. This house of bitter memories was an ill suited place to chart a path forward.

How do you fix this?
