Chapter 12 by Rebekka Rebekka

Will you be Milla tomorrow?

Yes and there is a unexpected guest

Morning light filters through the curtains, casting a warm glow across Milla's room. You stir, the memories of last night's exploration still vivid in your mind. For a moment, you lie there in the quiet aftermath, Milla's body still tingling with the echoes of pleasure.

As you sit up, the reality of the day ahead sets in. You're still Milla, and now you must continue to navigate her life with the same precision and care as before. The pen, now resting on the nightstand, is a stark reminder of the power at your disposal—and the complexity it's introduced into your life.

You rise from the bed, Milla's muscles stretching fluidly as you move. Her routine is now yours, and you follow it: choosing clothes she would wear, adopting the subtle nuances of her makeup, and fixing her hair in the style she favors. Each step feels more natural than the last, but you're careful not to let the ease with which you slip into her role lull you into complacency.

After breakfast, where you engage in light conversation with Milla's family, you head out the door to face the day. The walk to school is uneventful, but as you draw closer to the familiar buildings, a knot forms in your stomach. You're about to enter a world where Milla is known and loved, where expectations of her are set, and where you must meet them all without faltering.

As you approach the school gates, you notice a figure leaning casually against the fence, a figure that's both foreign and achingly familiar. It's Lasse—or rather, someone who looks exactly like him. The Doppelganger. Your heart pounds in your chest as you realize the implications of this encounter. The agent's words from the voice-box message play back in your mind: "You've been replaced by a Doppelganger, who can look and act just as you do when you every time you use your heritage."

You approach cautiously, and the Doppelganger greets you with Lasse's trademark grin. "Hey Milla," he says in Lasse's voice, a voice that's yours. "Ready for another thrilling day of academic achievement?"

The casual demeanor, the easy smile—it's all pitch-perfect. To anyone else, this is Lasse, as he's always been. Only you know the truth, and the knowledge is a heavy weight. You respond with a nod and a smile, playing along. "Of course, wouldn't miss it for the world," you reply, matching Milla's typical cheerful sarcasm.

As you walk into school together, you can't help but study the Doppelganger closely. He's an exact replica, down to the last detail, and he carries himself with all of Lasse's mannerisms and confidence. He interacts with classmates, laughs at the right moments, and even throws in an inside joke that only you and Tim would know.

Throughout the day, you watch the Doppelganger from a distance, a surreal experience of being an outside observer to your own life. He's flawless in his portrayal, and it's disconcerting to see how easily he fools everyone else. Friends clap him on the back, teachers nod in approval at his answers, and life goes on as if nothing has changed.

But everything has changed, and as Milla, you're caught in the eye of the storm. Every interaction, every decision, is fraught with the tension of maintaining your role. You find yourself wondering about the Doppelganger's nature. Is he just a shell, a mimic without substance, or is there a consciousness there, thinking your thoughts, feeling your feelings?

The questions swirl in your head as the day progresses, each hour bringing its own challenges. You're living a double life, and the strain is beginning to show. But you can't falter; too much depends on your performance, on the believability of your act as Milla.

Finally, the school day ends, and you find a moment of solitude in the chaos. You slip away to a quiet corner of the school grounds, a place where Milla would often go to think. It's there that you allow yourself a moment of vulnerability, a chance to confront the enormity of what's happening.

You pull out the pen, turning it over in your hands. This small object has turned your world upside down, given you experiences you never dreamed of, and presented you with dilemmas you're not sure how to solve.
