Chapter 19

What's her choice?
Yes - Dark Discovery
"That’s fine. I’m looking for one thing anyway." Raven said.
Zen nodded and opened the door. Stepping through, Raven felt the same weird feeling as she did going into her own mind. Maybe a little… odder than normal. It felt like slime rather than oatmeal. When she got her bearings back and stood up, not even realizing she was on the floor, she found herself in a long hallway. There were a couple of glass viewing panels every so often. Raven walked up and looked inside the first one.
There was a Cole inside, glad in baggy unwashed clothes and looking extremely thin and wiry. His eyes snapping to anything that moved or looked like it did, scribbling notes on a white board before erasing some. Everything in the room seemed to be triple padded and with several cases of emergency food and first-aid kits.
"His Fear." Raven muttered.
Raven moved up and down the hall as she looked into the rooms. She was sure Zen had made it like this to allow Raven to observe, but also make it clear the sorceress couldn’t do much. But right now she just wanted to see one emotion that should be here. It was just a manner of finding it.
She saw what looked to be Courage, striking poses, practicing combat and shouting one liners. She saw Happiness, who sat content in a big chair with shades of family around him. She even saw his Lust, who had full body posters of some girls and the Penny woman. She did note a good number of spandex heroes on some of the material and maybe than a few copies that had herself on it.
Eventually she found what she was looking for. At the end of the hallway as she expected. A largely empty room, with any furnishings that were there were shattered, broken or ripped apart. A rather emancipated figure wearing a dusty crinkled set of rags sat in the wooden floor leaning against the empty wall. It’s face masked by the hood of its ratty coat. Given She hadn’t seen this level of destruction from any of the others, this one to be..,
"Anger." She muttered to herself, eyes narrowing. "But that’s all it is, just anger." With how Cole had talked about his feelings of that one match he walked away from boxing over, Raven had expected something a bit more…, grand. Yes Zen has set this up, but it just seemed liked plain ordinary Anger.
"Perhaps I was too worried." Raven thought , turning to leave, "As usual I suppose. Raven being too paranoid for her…, own…, good…?"
It was then, just as she turned to leave, that a small glint caught her attention. Something she might not have seen unless she caught the light just right. Something she was quite sure Zen didn’t have a hand in designing.
There, under the remains of a ripped up rug, was a metal latch of some sort.
"A…, basement?” Raven paused to think inwardly, "A basement inside his Anger?"
Questions raced through her head as to what this could mean. Better yet, could she do anything with this? Zen had said Raven couldn’t do anything to the emotions but, would this count? To test, Raven simply checked to see if she could enter the cell. Using her powers, she found that passing through the glass viewing wall wasn’t hard at all. Anger didn’t seem to react to her at all.
"Alright. Now." Raven’s power flowed once more and the locked latch flew open, the heavy lock shattering. "Let’s see what is down here." She spoke to herself in an attempt to steel her slowly building nervous.
As Raven floated down into the darkness below she missed the smallest bit of movement by the figure left in the room. The being Raven had named Anger for just a moment, smiled under the shadow of his hood.
The room below was had to make out, but going by the ladder she was floating by, Raven had to guess the room was large. The small ball of light she had conjured only illuminated the rusty metal ladder she followed.
"How far down does this go?" Rave pondered, summoning a few more spheres and spread them out.
Eventually she hit the bottom where she landed on what seemed to be soft but firm black substance. Raven took a few steps out, sending the spheres out to scout. When nothing showed itself the sorceress took a few more steps out away from the ladder. For some reason she felt just a small hint of safety leave her.
"Why would the ladder be the ‘safe’ point? Just what is here?" Raven thought, looking around as she walked.
She stopped when she saw what looked like a large mound in an equally large divot. At least that’s what it seemed to her. “Better take a better look.” She thought as she sent out a sphere of light to highlight the shape. To her shock though the mound started to shake just a bit when the light got closer. Almost like it was quivering.
"What on earth..," Raven started before something happened she wasn’t expecting. A few things really.
First, the mound seemed to crack down the the center, revealing something inside it. Second, Raven realized it wasn’t a mound but rather an eye. Third, the eye seemed to lock onto Raven.
Finally, Raven for all her adventures and heroics, felt a level of fear rising in the back of her neck and a sense of dread deep in her stomach she had not been expecting.
As she was backing away, a sound reached her ears. A mix of a growl and deep screaming that came from all around her. The surface around her started to shift and shake which made her lose balance. As she looked up she began to see what looked like large toothy maws opening up on the ground. A ground Raven finally realized was alive, the flesh of some large beast.
The shapes and shadows around her started to charge towards her. In a panic Raven half closed her eyes and summoned a bubble of her magic to ward off the attack. She felt the impact and heard the cracking of the shield. "Crap crap crap, what is this?!?" Raven thought as she poured on more juice into her shield.
There were a few more more slams against the barrier as the attacks continued. Raven closed her eyes in strain while trying to hold it together. She was wondering how long she'd have to hold it before everything went still and the area around her must have brightened up, as she could tell even with her eyes closed. Raven opened her eyes just a bit before realizing she was back in her own mind plane. Zen stood before her with a concerned look, the door next to her slammed close. Raven let go of the breath she was holding as she lowered her barrier and herself.
"I thought you said that nothing could effect me." Raven said between breaths.
"I said you couldn’t." Zen replied, offering a hand, "I never said you couldn’t be effected. That said, I wasn’t expecting something like that to be there. Forgive me but I assumed it would be best to pull you back out."
Raven sighed as she took the hand and stood up with the help. "Neither did I. That’s why I was on the back foot when it noticed me. That was…, something I didn’t expect to see in Cole."
"What was that anyway? It didn’t seem to match any normal emotions.. Perhaps close to Anger but…." Zen commented. Off from the side, there was a cross between a grumble and a scream. Seemed Anger Raven overheard and took offense.
"It’s tied to Anger but it was something…, else. That wasn’t just blind animal fury either. I could sense it was targeting me rather than mindlessly thrashing." Raven replied. A light shiver ran down her body as she recalled the attack. "Even through the shield it was aiming for light tissue damage. As if it wanted to hurt me but not end the fight."
"Sounds to suffer but not kill." Zen noted as the clone dipped her head in thought, "Even your Anger usually just desires to smash, destroy, or just kill."
"Do you think it could be caused by the drink he had?" Zen offered. Raven shook her head at the idea.
"Doubtful. It seemed far too ingrained to be something new or recent. In fact, fairly certain it’s something Cole’s had brewing below the surface most his life.” Raven replied, “In fact, I think that’s why his uncle taught him that style."
"Shall I pull over Intelligence to have her focus on the issue?" The emotion copy held out a hand with the tips of her fingers gathering energy. A Cell to the side started to react to the magic.
"No. I think… I just need some time to process this." Raven said as she took another large breath, "I should get up soon anyway to make sure Cole wasn’t effected."
With a bow from Zen and a wave back; Raven started the spell to return back to the real world.
Her eyes snapped opened, quickly shifting to look to the side. The clock showed only five minutes had passed since she first woke up. Disentangling herself from Cole, Raven quietly got up off the bed. Fortunately the bed was large enough to make something like shifting weight not be as noticeable. So long as the person moving was trying not to be noticed. She walked to the other side of the bed to get a better look at the man. His face seemed to be scrunched up in a grimace and his hands were holding the sheets rather tightly.
Raven put a hand on his forehead to check his temperature. He didn’t feel any hotter than someone who was in bed normally would be. Still, her touch seemed to have an effect as the boxer eased up on his grip.
"Sleep well Cole." Raven whispered before heading off to the shower.
