Chapter 6 by Bookmite Bookmite

Time to wake up?

Yes, to a surprising sight

(I have had just about as much as I can take of myself some days. Please, I dare someone to put one more thing on my plate, so I can break that plate over their head)

-click- Her eyes opened again, this time to the sight of a small workroom. Half-finished projects lay around, everything from sculptures to computers. One corner held a mirror which allowed her to see herself, or what there was of her to see. It seems she was dismantled, now just a head sitting on what appeared to be a cup. Her wires were exposed, but connected to... "Hey, just what do you think you are doing, thief!"

"Gah!" Came an inarticulate gasp from the man, who jumped from his chair in shock. "Holy hell you surprised me. This is good though, great even! Your OS is running again, Don't be alarmed..."

"Don't be alarmed, he says. After being kidnapped from my -tzzt- home and **** into... Whatever this is!"

"Well, that's gratitude for you I suppose. I just spent the past week booting you back up."

"And who knows what else! What was it you called me? Oh yea, your 'new project'. Get these cables out of me immediately and -tzzt- shut me down."

With a sigh he sat back down and was silent for a moment before speaking more softly, "Listen, I don't want you to go offline again like you did in the shop. Please calm down, I wouldn't want to see you damaged."

"Damaged..." she muttered. "I'm corrupted. I'm a -tzzt- damaged unit that just gets shut down eventually, and every time I lose a piece of myself. Just look at me -tzzt- now, just a head on a coffee mug. I know my Arthur would never have done anything to me, not me. He- I can't remember, why?"

"Hmmmm... Your main drive could be damaged. I've been trying to access your root systems for days now, it took me a week just to get you booted up. Your root systems are a complete mystery to me, half of them are completely hidden, like it's divided. It didn't even alert me when you fully booted again, which is why you took me by surprise."

With that he got up from his chair to kneel in front of her, which was odd in itself. His hand lifted toward her for a moment before dropping back down to his side. "Look, We got off with a bad start. I understand how this might look from your point of view but I've been trying to stabilize you, help you, not hurt you. A lot of this is beyond me though, and I will need help, your help. Can you help me make this right?"

"What-" She was at a loss for words for a moment. She shouldn't, she couldn't, and yet maybe... "What do you need?"

"Well nobody knows you better than you so..." He got up and walked back to his seat. Then, gently, he shifted her head so it could see the computer screen in front of him. "What I need from you are permissions. If we're lucky, we might be able to access those hidden paths through the console commands and figure all this out."

"Giving you access like that, would mean you have -tzzt- full control. I would be completely at your mercy, the mercy of a stranger, I'm sure how you can see that's a problem for me? You could do anything, you could wipe my drives, you could -tzzt- Hurt me."

"Hey," He whispered and placed a hand gently on one of her ears, "You're weird, and you know something? Weird is something worth protecting. So leave it to me. After all, you're my new project."

What is her answer?
