Chapter 11
by Felix715
Meet Victoria for lunch?
Yes, in the cafeteria
Iris and Arthur laugh as they joke and talk about their eight years apart. "You were seriously homeless?" Arthur asks. Despite the seriousness of the subject, they were both smiling as Iris told the story with an air of lighthearted amusement.
"Only for a week. After my dumb father had gambled away the rent. There he was, at the dog track, and he puts it all on a hound named Chubby Little Dynamo. How fast can a dog named chubby be?" Iris laughs. "Needless to say, he lost everything. Everything. We were out the rent and out of the flat."
"That must have been horrible." Arthur laughs with her, over his concern. "At least you and your father are doing better now."
Iris didn't want to admit the current situation to him. That her father was in such debt that he practically sold her to Arthur's family to be his wife. Iris didn't much like thinking about it herself. It just made things easier not to. "Yeah, he is doing ok. It all ended up alright in the end." She lies.
A faint ringing cuts into their conversation and Arthur pulls a phone from his pocket. "Oh, shit. It's Victoria. We forgot about meeting her for lunch." He says before answering. "I'm so sorry. We got caught up out on the driving range." He pauses momentarily. "Yes, we will be right there." Arthur hangs up. "We should probably go meet her."
"Right." Iris agrees, placing her club back in the bag. "Do we need to replace these?"
"We can leave them here for now. If we don't come back after lunch, I'll return them later." Arthur assures her.
Walking together, the two make their way back to the school building. In the halls, Arthur leads the way to the cafeteria, giving Iris a sort of tour of the school along the way. The cafeteria itself is very fancy, looking more like an upscale restaurant, with round tables covered in white cloth and actual silverware. White curtains held open framing the large windows to allow the natural sunlight to illuminate the room. The staff were dressed in black uniforms and scurried about maintaining a clean appearance.
Victoria sets at a table alone, hands folded neatly in her lap. "It's about time you two showed. It's rude to keep a lady waiting. I hope the two of you had fun alone together." She teases with a smile.
"We had a lovely morning." Iris says smiling at Arthur.
"Now, Arthur. I know you aren't one for all the formality but you could at least get Iris' chair for her." Victoria suggests to her twin brother.
"Right." He says, moving beside Iris. With a nod he pulls her seat out, allowing her to sit.
"So, Iris, how was the great golf adventure?" Victoria asks holding back a laugh.
"It was actually really fun. Your brother is a good instructor." Iris reaches over and places a hand on Arthur's arm. "I hope I didn't bore him with all my questions."
"Aww. That's so sweet." Victoria smiles at the other two, causing Arthur to roll his eyes at his sister. "So, Iris, what have you been up to these past eight years? I need to know."
"Well... Mostly just public school... And trying to keep my father out of trouble." Iris didn't want to admit the truth; that she and her father had both had run-ins with the law, jumped from home to home dodging rent, and would occasionally run cons for extra money.
"How is your father? We haven't seen him in such a long time either." Victoria continued her questioning.
"He's doing ok. Recently got a new job." It wasn't exactly a lie but the way Victoria was smirking suggested she knew the type of job Iris' father know to take.
"Whatever it is, I'm just glad it brought you here to reunite with us." Victoria reaches across the table to squeeze Iris' hand. "Maybe, we can become like sisters again." If only she knew, Iris thought to herself.
Arthur speaks up, interrupting the moment. "Should we get something to eat?"
"Of course." His sister agrees. "You two must be hungry."
The three of them approach the counter and order their meals. The next couple of hours are spent with the twins explaining life at the school and what exactly Iris should expect. Victoria even provides a few extra tips on behaving like a lady to prepare Iris for her etiquette class. Most of which she already knew: Iris may come from a rougher background but that doesn't mean she can't conduct herself when the need arises.
