Yes, but she can't get it open

Mackenzie glanced around the corner, mostly concealed behind the wall. That woman was still there. Probably waiting to give a statement to the police or something. She sighed. She'd have to be quick about this.

She sidled along the wall, thankful that she'd grown these hedges. They didn't completely conceal her, but it'd do. She scampered to the gate and ran into the backyard, heart hammering against her ribs. Those sirens were getting ever closer. It was crunch time.

She sprinted across the backyard, not caring if she snapped a branch under her bare feet. She made to the window.

"Alright," she muttered. "Now then." Sticking her tongue between her teeth, she gripped the window by the metal lift and pulled.

THUNK. It didn't budge. Those sirens were practically on top of her. She did not have time for this crap. Heave, girl!

Nothing. Shit. This was bad. She tried shifting it a bit in its frame, trying to loosen it a bit. It jiggled, but didn't move in the desired upward direction.

She squeezed her eyes shut, pressing her sweaty forehead against the glass, and prayed. She needed this to work. She could not afford an arrest. "Please, just open. I'll never do this again. I'll turn things around. Please. I beg you." She didn't know who she was praying to. She just sent the thought out into the universe and hoped someone would listen.

She pulled.

THUNK.

Nothing.

She heard voices, distant and muffled, a mix of male and female. Footsteps in the grass. Come on. Just work.

Her eyes were watery when she looked up and saw the blue uniforms enter her yard. She stepped back from the window, teeth grinding as she saw her life going right down the drain before her eyes.

"Ma'am," said one of the officers, standing back a little warily. "I'm going to need you to answer some questions for me."
