What Task Occupies Your Attention Next?
Writing Some Letters
You stalk up into the castle's former great hall, now roofless except a few rotten timbers and a handful of patchy boards and shingles at one end which don't even keep the rain out of that section, and order a writing desk brought. You begin very carefully penning a few letters.
The first is a notice to be copied and sent to the neighboring fiefs informing them that you had their idiot knight and required a ransom of 20 Sovereigns (plus expenses) for her return, minus her gear, with her gear being appraised and negotiated for separately. However you swiftly realize you lack enough identifying information to make a good ransom note, like her name, and the name of her lord, so you put it away as a first draft.
Next, you start writing a letter to your mother and father, informing them you have found a temporary lair for yourself and your kobold tribe in this abandoned castle, and are planning to stay here for at least the next two hundred years or so, refurbishing the castle and becoming a feudal lord over the area. You also inform them of the realization you have had about your constant troubles with knights and mages, and how you have resolved to change your demeanor to better integrate with the outside world. That letter finished you have one of your kobold attendants fold and seal it, then put it in one of the few intact rooms of the castle to wait to be carried to your parent's lair in Duskwallow Marsh by a courier.
Your third letter is for King Rendell, the monarch in whose kingdom this castle lies. The letter asks that he recognize your lordship over the castle and surrounding swamp, in return for which you will pledge an oath of fealty to the throne and use your considerable power and intellect to make the swamp a profitable fief, which obviously has not been done previously. You outline a few small points of your plans for the swamp in vague and general terms: growing medicinal, dying, and spice plants, cultivating fish populations in the rivers that feed and cut through it, and building one or more villages mounted on pilings, but deliberately don't give him enough information to put the plans into action without you. This letter too is folded and sealed, then put away to be carried by a courier to the capital at Roknar.
Writing these letters has taken about three hours, so you are confident the knight's wounds will have healed and she will be awake, time to check in on her...
