Pokémon Aura Battlers takes place on the world of Pangaia, and specifically the continent of Kassia, and the country of Sattoh. Sattoh combines attributes of Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, and Sinnoh.
Other countries of note on Kassia include Meridia (which includes elements of Unova), alongside Kalos, Galar, and Paldea (which are named after the game regions, but not perfect 1:1 recreations).
There are other continents, but they are not of immediate consequence save for one. Kamishima is an island nation off the coast of Kassia, which features elements of Johto and Hoenn, as well as Hisui and Kitagami.
Aura Battles are maintained and regulated by the World Battle Federation (WBF), an international organization that runs every league - big or small - across the world, as well as international tournaments. Various smaller organizations under the WBF umbrella operate the national and continental leagues, with Kassia’s league being the Kassian Aura Battle League (KABL; colloquially “Kabal” or “Cabal”). Crim participates in the KABL.
There are multiple sub-leagues under the WBF like the KABL, each administering different regions (usually continents or multi-national blocs). For example, Kamishima has it’s own league, but they typically send battlers (especially rookie battlers) abroad to participate in the KABL.
Within these organizations, there are multiple different divisions and leagues. In the KABL, battlers start their first year in the Rookie League, which itself is divided into four tiers: S Division, AAA Division, AA Division, and A Division, from most prestigious to least. After the conclusion of their Rookie League, battlers of a high caliber will be recruited by various Teams, which form the meat of the KABL.
Those not signed to a Team, whether rookie or veteran, but wish to continue battling join minor leagues or touring tournament leagues further down the hierarchy, below the KABL but still administered by them. Others join various underground leagues (of varying degrees of legality) or become Free Battlers (this universe’s equivalent of professional wrestling).
The Teams that form the bulk of the KABL are divided into three categories: City Teams, Corporate Teams, and Club Teams. City teams are hosted in and funded by the major cities of Kassia. Corporate teams are similarly funded by major businesses for the prestige battling brings them. Club Teams are private entities started by individuals or groups, though they usually have some form of financial backing due to the expenses involved in maintaining a Team. The three categories have their own self-contained leagues but also compete in inter-league battles. In that regard, Club Teams struggle to compete against the top echelon of the City and Corporate Teams.
Whether City, Corporate or Club, Teams field their rosters in a variety of battle formats, including Singles (one Battler with one Pokémon), Tag Team (teams of two Battlers with one Pokémon each), Trios (teams of three Battles with one Pokémon each), Team (five vs five with a first to three KOs format), Duo (one Battler with two Pokémon simultaneously), and Paragon (one Battler with two to six Pokémon partners). Like Rookie League, each type of battle is divided into the four divisions: S, AAA, AA, and A.
Similarly, each Team has a Leader, which is not only a symbolic position but a factual one. Leaders are the strongest individual Battlers on each Team and not only Battle but manage their Teams, including adjusting the roster, scouting talent, and training. Leaders are of such great skill and have such important duties, they only compete in the Leaders League, which only occurs once every three years.
Thus, the KABL (and similar Leagues) is divided into a hierarchy like this:
Kassian Aura Battle League
KABL Premier Championship League (the inter-league championship; City vs Corporate vs Club)
KABL Leaders Championship League
KABL City Championship League

With the exception of the Leaders League and the Premier Championship League, each League under KABL is contested annually, with seasons having varying lengths, starting dates, and ending dates. Battlers usually focus on one league and rarely participate in more than two.
Extra-league tournaments are also common. For example, each nation in Kassia holds a national championship every three years (on the years not featuring the Leaders or Premier Championship Leagues) and the Kassian Champion’s Cup, a tournament between the nations of Kassia (held every four years). There is also a World Cup held once every five years.
Leaders will most often be famous trainers from the series, though not every Leader will be a notable trainer and not every notable trainer is a Leader. Example teams of Leaders include…
Saffron Psychers (City Team)
Leader: Sabrina Geller
Goldenrod Volunteers (City Team)
Leader: Whitney Springfield
