Chapter 81 by zenxraider zenxraider

And so begins your first mission!

With a welcome party

A rush of wind whips through the exposed cabin as your craft speeds away over lush green forests into the mountain valley just southeast of the Kingdom. You stood at the door with your hand grasping at a safety strap while the girls socialize behind you, watching as Vale eventually faded into a small speck in the distance. It was then that you realized this would be your first real encounter with Grimm since arriving in Remnant. Such an obscure yet painfully obvious detail had you mentally rolling with amusement. Here you stood with the decision to wipe the scourge from the face of the world, and you instead prioritized sticking your dick in numerous women; an understandable endeavor but still. A smile grows on your face as the familiar anticipation of battle fills your veins. That was when a voice calling over the din of flight pulled you from your thoughts.

"Hmm?" you ask, turning towards the girls.

"I asked if we'll get to see more of your sick moves out there or if you'll be making us do all the work," said Yang, arms crossed and eyebrows waggling playfully.

You smirk at her in return.

"That depends on what kind of resistance we run into. Grimm aren't that big of a concern to me, but two certain individuals might be."

Your mention of people gives you Team RWBY's full attention, in particular Blake given her history with the White Fang.

"Since Blake and I crashed the White Fang rally, the Vale PD and General Ironwood's intelligence teams have cooperated in a joint investigation regarding Roman Torchwick's possession of stolen Atlesian Prototype technology. Their findings have pointed us to the abandoned city of Mountain Glenn located southeast of Vale. This settlement is best known not only for its expansive subterranean network of railways to shuttle supplies to and from the Kingdom but also for its efforts in preserving what was left of the city underground; a perfect location for a base of operations, a base we're tasked with finding. I trust you girls are familiar with our destination."

"We've studied up on Mountain Glenn last month," answered Weiss. "The city has been abandoned for the last 54 years. It served as Vale's greatest failure in expansion beyond the Wall after it was overrun by Grimm. In a **** effort to salvage the operation, the citizens went underground and sealed off all surface access. This too ended in failure about a year later when a mining operation broke into a network of Grimm infested caverns. The few survivors who managed to escape loaded the supply train back to Vale and collapsed the tunnel behind them. It's been a ghost town ever since."

"Exactly. A shroud of negative energy sits perpetually over this urban graveyard. Expect an extremely heavy Grimm presence when we arrive."

"Yes!" cheers Ruby as she grabs her beloved scythe from her belt and cradles it as a mother would a child. "I finally get to let my sweetheart do the talking!"

"I like your enthusiasm Ruby, but remember this is a mission first. As soon as we hit the ground, you have command of your team and I expect you to act accordingly. Understood?"

The tone of your voice, while far from harsh, still held a no-nonsense inflection which has the young rosebud hastily sobering up with a sputtered affirmative. Her tell-tale awkwardness has her sister chuckling quietly as she teasingly punches her in the arm. Cute as her quirkiness could be, you remained their de-facto leader on this mission and intended to teach them properly.

"Speaking of which..." interjected Blake. "You mentioned there are two individuals you're somewhat worried about. Care to share who they are?"

"The first is the woman Ruby and I confronted at the CCT on Prom Night. As for the second... well, you already know who he is."

"Yeah..." Blake confirmed, her eyes turning downcast. "Him I know."

Noting the confusion on the faces of her team, Blake went on to explain an abridged version of her past with Adam, how they formed a bond together during their time in the White Fang and his steady descent into darkness. You remained silent as she told her story yet smiled when you saw Yang reach forward to hold her hand whenever Blake's voice wavered. It was encouraging to see the normally aloof Faunus allow herself to take comfort in her closest friends. After some reassurances from the girls that they would all stand by Blake's side, the rest of the flight was spent in relative silence until the ruined cityscape of Mountain Glenn rose into view.

Neither the show nor video games could properly do the ruined city justice, not nearly as much as seeing it now in person. Skyscrapers and apartment blocks were in disarray, and the streets were littered with abandoned vehicles. A perpetual haze and gloom seemed to permeate the city, a testament to Vale's greatest failure. Reaching out with your energy, you were **** to consciously suppress a shudder upon coming into contact with the potency of darkness settling across its streets, and the occupying Grimm were everywhere, almost as if they were awaiting your arrival. Peering down into the streets, you're met with a disturbing sight and a frown adorns your face. Not only did the Grimm know you were coming, but they had already spotted your craft and were actively following your flight. A great mass of black filled the streets as these creatures of pure darkness came out of the woodwork. Something was wrong. Grimm of this caliber wouldn't be intelligent enough to move as a unit. Unless...

"Michael?"

Her voice snapped you out of your thoughts as you turned your attention to Ruby, the young Huntress gripping tightly at your hand.

"Are you ok?" she continues, silver eyes peering up at you with concern.

"It's nothing," you answer. "Just a feeling."

"That is a lot of Grimm," commented Yang, her expression mirroring yours.

"Which means we won't be able to land in the street," Ruby added as she moved towards the pilot's hatch. "Can you put us down on one of the buildings? Someplace where the Grimm can't get to us easily."

"You got it, kid," the pilot answered, angling the craft towards the flat top of an apartment.

You smile with approval at this side of Ruby. Quirks aside, she could be a competent leader when the situation demanded. Blasting away dirt and dust, the Bullhead comes to a hover as the five of you disembark. Just as quickly, the craft departs and without the roar of the engines to drown it out, you're met with the snarls and howls of ravenous Grimm closing in on you, and with them came an oppressive shadow.

"Uh guys? Does anyone else feel that?" asked Weiss nervously, her knuckles turning white from the **** grip she kept on her rapier, Myrtenaster.

"I've fought Grimm before, but this is just too much," agreed Blake, sweat beading on her brow as she drew Gambol Shroud in its pistol form. "Either we head out there or they claw their way in. How're we supposed to fight against all of them?"

"If you got any suggestions Lover Boy, now would be the time," chimes in Yang, voice wavering despite cycling a new set of rounds into her gauntlets, Ember Celica.

"Something else is at work here," you explain, voicing your suspicions. "I'll help as best I can by sharing my aura, but I must remain here and concentrate. Keep them out as best you can. Can I trust you all with this?"

"We got your back," Ruby affirmed with a nod before turning to her team. "Ok guys, spread out and cover the exits. We might be here for awhile."

Drowning out the background noise while Ruby took command of her team, you kneel and close your eyes, settling into a meditative trance. The physical world fell away from the view of your Mind's Eye, taking on a shadowed and wispy appearance, broken only by the auras of the four girls with you, each one distinct to their personalities; Yang's fiery orange, Blake's mystifying violet, Weiss' frigid blue, and Ruby's silver purity. In the center was you, a brilliant beacon of light belying your Godhood, and by your command it reached out with empowered, golden tendrils that connected to each of the girls, boosting their already considerable auras beyond human limitations. With your power safeguarding them, the suffocating darkness was **** back, revitalizing their spirits. Your safeguards completed, you turn your attention to the darkness itself, intent on finding the cause and snuffing it out.

What do you find?
