Chapter 2

What's next?

Wintered Over

It had been 12 years since I left Lacey’s mother and moved to Alaska. It wasn’t a horrible break up really. We weren’t in love anymore and I had found work in rural Alaska. I left Lacey behind too, but at the time I figured everybody would be better off if I left. For the most part I had no contact with my former family, and assumed everybody was happy that way.

That is until I got a call from my estranged daughter. She had turned 19 a couple months prior and her mother and new boyfriend had kicked her out. She wasn’t very clear why, but she needed a place to stay. I was surprised at the phone call, but the upcoming Winter was looking lonely and I would most likely be snowed in my house for a few months anyway. Some company couldn’t hurt.

I invited her to my cabin. I even paid for her plane ticket. Waiting at the airport caused some anxiety for me as I wasn’t even sure we would recognize eachother. That is until she stepped off the plane…

How does Lacey respond to her father?
