Chapter 8
by Manbear
Do you follow him?
Why not?
After only a moment of hesitation you follow the old man. Maybe he can help you find Pyrrhus, if nothing else hopefully there will be something to eat and drink wherever it is that you are heading. As you follow the grey haired man you wonder if you should explain about how lucky you were to survive the combat with the mercenary. One of the gods must favor you and your goal maybe Aphrodite is rewarding your love for Eudora, mouthing a silent prayer to the goddess of love you pick up your pace until you are just behind your limping guide.
His shoulders are wide and muscled under his tunic, and his arms are covered with the many healed scars of a veteran. There is no point in trying to pretend that you are a swordsman, he would know you are a fake the first time he sees you hold the old blade in your hand. Before you get a chance to explain, the man leads you through an archway and into a smaller square surrounded by three more nondescript buildings. Guiding you into the house on the right he leads you down a set of steps into a basement room roughly ten paces by fifteen paces lit by a single flickering lantern.
"Close that door lad, we'll be safe enough here for now." He sits on a bundle of firewood with a grunt and turns to you in the dim light watching as you swing the heavy door to the room shut and drop the latch securely locking the door.
"Good. What be yer name lad?"
"Adonis sir. You should know I got lucky in that fight. I'm not really a good swordsman, in fact, I never even used a sword before." You feel better for getting that off your chest, but you wonder if he'll send you away now that he knows.
"I guess any who kills a man has some luck at his shoulder. The point is lad that you had the spine to carry the blade and used it well enough when ye had to." His eyes travel up and down your emaciated frame taking in your worn tunic, hemp belt and makeshift scabbard. "Ye look like ye could use some food and drink lad." There be ale and bread in that chest. Get some now, before it gets moved. Even at the best of times you were always hungry, after nearly a month of living off the land you did not have to be offered food twice. Opening the lid you see several fat jars sealed with wax and over a dozen loaves of bread packed neatly into the chest. Taking a loaf and one of the jars you close the lid and sit on the chest tearing a mouthful of bread from the loaf before you break the seal on the flask.
The man watches you without saying a word as you gnaw of the loaf and a take gulp after gulp of the cool rich ale. Your stomach had shrunk to nearly nothing over the past several weeks and although you would have loved to finish the entire loaf you were full after just a few mouthfuls.
"Are ye from Athenapolis?" He asked when your hungry bites slowed. Shaking your head slowly you wonder if you just sealed your fate. If you were not from Athenapolis, then you must be one of the invaders. Should you try to explain about Eudora, or just wait and see what the man does.
How much do you tell him?
