Homosexuality was accepted. Same sex marriage was allowed, but for men, it had to be negotiated between the two families, a dowry like exchange taking place. Both men in the relationship would belong to only one’s mother. As an end result, the laws on divorce created an interesting situation. A woman could divorce her spouse at her pleasure, but a man was bound to his spouse. This meant that for two men, there was no such thing as divorce, their marriage was permanent.

What really caught her eye was how this world handled being transgender.

Female to male was a simple though irrevocable process. The only business that had to be handled before hand was any potential divorces, since legally giving up one’s status as a woman ment the loss of all legal rights, including divorce. The person in question would go before a court of law and would ask to be recognized as a man, that they were doing this willingly and accepted what they were doing. The judge would agree and The newly legally recognized man now belonged to his closest living female relative, though in this case, she must be from a senior generation. Daughters were not allowed to take position of the trans parent upon transition, though they were free to marry them immediately after. The new belonger would also be asked by the judge to name their new belongee.

Male to female, on the other hand, was an arduous, complex series of tests that took years. Psychological, physiological, one doctor joked as she was examining Tabatha that she would have an easier time jumping a unicycle backwards through a flaming hoop while juggling running chainsaws and blindfolded.

Tabatha was amazed that all of this had come from Chad’s mind.
