Chapter 7 by SG SG

What's next?

What do you think?

As they pulled into the driveway of the modest bungalow they shared, Sarah noticed a few neighbors speeding by on bikes. "Zack! We should ride bikes!"

He was starting to get used to her distractability by now. "Why don't we go inside and talk about it?" She gave him two enthusiastic thumbs up and started up the walkway.

Zack finally felt like he was getting used to this new situation. Sarah wasn't exactly dumber, per se, but she was very, very easily distracted. It seemed like anything that got her attention immediately made her forgot about whatever she was thinking about before. Well, maybe not forget, but set aside. Her perpetual excitement was starting to get exhausting, though - Zack hoped that in a less stimulating environment she might calm down a little bit.

As they entered the house, Sarah took a deep breath and turned to him. "Can you believe this is gonna last a week? This is incredible!" She turned and sashayed into the kitchen, dropping her purse in the foyer. Zack picked it up and followed her as she opened the fridge.

"Ohhh my god, that feels amazing!" It took him a second to realize she was talking about the blast of cool air on the fridge. Suddenly a thought occurred to him.

"Hey babe, you wanna try some of my leftover salmon?"

Zack knew she hated fish. They had actually had a small fight a few nights before when he brought back the leftovers from lunch with a friend; she seemed offended that it would even share fridge space with her food. Now, though, she was enthusiastic about the prospect of eating some.

"That is an amazing idea!" Sarah cried, grabbing the container and setting it on the counter. Without warning she immediately popped it open and started shoveling the fish into her mouth with her bare hands. "Mmmmffh ths ish so good..." she moaned, crumbs of breading on her chin.

Whatever he was expecting, it wasn't that. Cold salmon sounded disgusting to him. He assumed she would heat it up first, but she just dove into it like she hadn't eaten in days. "Uh, don't you think it would be better heated up?"

Her eyes lit up. "Oh! You're right, that sounds even better!" She got out a plate and unceremoniously dumped the whole thing onto it, then turned to the microwave. "Heh, I guess I got a little ahead of myself there."

"Yeah, why exactly did you do that? I assumed you'd want to heat it up."

Sarah threw the dish in the microwave and jabbed the buttons. "I don't know, when you suggested it I just got so excited. I hadn't even thought to try salmon, but suddenly it just sounded so good to me. I didn't think to heat it up because I couldn't wait to try it!"

"But you normally hate fish."

She thought about it, and smiled. "I know, that was part of the fun. It just sounded good, and I knew that with this new feeling I would love it. God, it's incredible! Imagine if you knew anything you tried you'd enjoy! I'm still thinking of all the things I could try. I could go spelunking, or paint, or clean the house, and it would all feel great!"

Zack realized that she was finally thinking about her condition, not just enjoying it. With her impulsiveness in check, she could consider all of the possibilities this opened up. It had been decades since she could get out of bed without a struggle, and suddenly she felt like she could do anything. His mind raced with possibilities.

She pulled the salmon out and was wolfing it down with a fork. He noticed steam coming off of it. "Hey hon, isn't that still hot?"

She stopped eating and looked up at him, tears of pain in her eyes. "Yeah, it actually is. It's burning my mouth! I didn't even realize that's burning I feel, because it feels good. I can't believe it, even pain feels good right now!" Her eyes lit up with inspiration. She slapped herself, hard. The tears of pain started to flow and her face was crimson where she'd made contact.

"Whoa, Sarah, stop! You can't do that!" Zack rushed forward and grabbed her forearms. She looked and her hands in his, then at his face, and laughed.

"Ok, ok, I won't do it anymore. I just wanted to see how it would feel. It felt good! Zack, it's unbelievable! Everything feels so good right now!"

He stared at her, aghast. She was eating fish and slapping herself. Was this even Sarah anymore? Then something occurred to him. She enjoyed things she normally hated. Unbidden, a few things he had always wanted to do came to mind. He looked into her eyes, so full of eagerness and mirth, and made a request.

What does Zack want to try?
