What an amazing opportunity.

With the new position comes a massive pay rise, and your own huge office tucked away on the top floor of the building. Gemma gets her own desk out the front of your office, and the location is far enough away from the general office that if she tries any funny business, no one is likely to walk in on you. The office throws Michael a farewell party, given his need to move to the head office interstate, and once he is gone you finally take your place as the boss of the entire building. The two of you stay in touch, of course, as the national manager, he is still your direct superior, although he now has many other regional managers that he has to deal with all across the country. Every so often he takes a private call from you asking for advice, even though you're well familiar with what the role entails.

With the new responsibility comes far more work, and you find yourself stuck in the office toiling away, often late into the night. Gemma seems to understand the need not to disturb you. That, or she’s trying to get on your good side. She again impresses you in the way she excels at her job, and her ability to process what’s going around her at all times is a rare quality not seen in many. You wonder what might have become of her if her father hadn’t dragged her to this quiet town, where much of her potential was suppressed.

You admit to yourself that she actually makes a difficult job easier, but you're careful not to show too much gratitude lest she take it the wrong way.
