Weekly Check in

Rikki sat across from Devin in her cramped office. His dark eyes held a spark of something that Rikki couldn't quite place. Their interactions were supposed to be clinical, detached, but Rikki had grown concerned for Devin's welfare. After seeing him at the Corpses base the other night she found her sense of duty extended beyond the rigid confines of her job description.

“Devin, I’ve heard word you’ve been spotted around the Corpses territory, I need to know if you’re involved with them again.”

“What? Of course not. You know I’m trying to stay clean.”

“Devin,” Rikki sighed. “Don’t lie to me.” Silence hung between them fo a few moments before Devin finally relented.

“Okay, okay a couple of guys I knew from the Corpses came by my place. I didn’t want to go with them but you gotta understand. These guys, once you’re in with them they consider you in for life.”

“Jesus Christ Devin.”

“I just went along with them to keep them happy. I’m not getting involved with them I swear. But it’s hard you know. They took me to the old base, they were talking about some job coming up. Then that hero chick Nightingale showed up and I got the fuck out of there. I didn’t want to be there I swear.”

There was desperation in his voice, one that softened Rikki’s resolve. She believed him.

“Devin, why do you do this to me? I believe you but you’re not making this easy as your parole officer.”

“I know I’m sorry. You’ve been so good to me I don’t want to let you down.”

Rikki watched the young man before her, she’d always had a soft spot for him.

“Give me your phone.” She ordered. Devin looked surprised but didn’t argue. He handed it over and Rikki began typing in it.

“This is my personal number. If anything happens with the Corpses again, you call me and I can help.” Devin looked at her and gave her a genuine smile.

“Wow, thank you, you’re amazing.”

“But you are only to use this number for emergencies, understand?”

“Of course.”

Rikki stood up to let him out but Devin grabbed her, pulling her into a hug.

“Thank you, you’re the only person who’s ever believed in me.”

“You’re welcome.” Rikkie smiled and hugged him back.
