Chapter 16 by Maikeru_Katari Maikeru_Katari

Talk or walk?

Walk

"When did you get here?" You ask holding her wide-eyed gaze. Not that it really mattered, she was here now and that was good for yourself as you know only needed to find one other.

"I." Sam starts but falters. Her face scrunches up, her eyes dart to the side and her arms cross under her chest. "I only just got here, why?"

"No reason. I mean it doesn't matter. We can talk on the way." You quickly fumble out a response, your mind a little more preoccupied with finding Lucy now. "Come on follow me, you too Hina." You glance over at the still flushed Asian girl. She meekly nods and silently follows closely behind.

"What? Where are you going?" Sam asks through pursed lips. You begin to scroll through your phone once more looking for Lucy's number.

"We're getting out of here before-" You're interrupted by your phone ringing in your hand. You instantly answer, "Lucy! Where are you?"

"Hiya Michael, I'm just leaving through the main yard right now and thought I'd see how long you'll be." You let out a quiet breath which you hadn't realised you were holding in. "Bella seems to be in a rush when she called me so I wanted to make sure you wouldn't keep her waiting like I know you like too."

You pick up your pace, not paying much attention too the people around you. "Yeah, I won't keep her waiting. I'm on my way now." There's almost no one around now as you near closer to the main exit.

"Good to hear, I'll be waiting with Bella then." There's a brief pause before she finishes. "I love you big brother." Then the call ends.

* A few minutes later.

You, Sam and Hina were half jogging up the large path leading from the central tower of Ravenwood to the large fenced gate that was the only entree point in sight. You'd finally told Sam what was happening. You'd already told her about the talk you had with Bella so she instantly understood the need to move faster. Surprisingly Hina didn't question whether or not you were lying, actually she hadn't said anything since you talked with her before the fire alarm.

Many of the students were bottled up by the gate in an attempt to exit. Apparently the news that the virus had reached Ashfield was now spreading like wildfire throughout the open yard. There were screams of terror from beyond the walls that threatened to entrapped you.

By the time you had reached the gates the rest of the mass of bodies had scattered and were all spreading out in different directions across the city. The mass was accompanied by other faces; faces that had blood dripping from there mouths, limbs hanging in uncomfortable positions off their body, and were chasing the cries of the students.

It was here. The horror that Bella knew was coming was finally here.

"Oh god!" Sam exclaimed. You glance over at the two girls who had been following closely, Sam was looking paler than usual and Hina was staring at the ground with her hands clasped tightly together.

You peer through the crowd and spy Lucy getting into the back of Bella's car, a big four by four SUV. You grab a hand of each of your companions and proceed to drag them towards the car, all the while trying not to look at the bodies that lie scattered across the ground. "Come on. We're almost there." You grit your teeth and attempt to steady your heart.

One, two. One, two. You count each time your foot touches the ground. You see Bella as you draw closer. Her tall figure of six-foot-two towers over the car bonnet, long raven black hair drifts in the wind as she paces around the car.

"Bella!" You call out. Her focus snaps onto you immediately with pinpoint accuracy considering the screams surrounding you. You make it to the car as she opens up the back door upon your arrival, her cool blue eyes nervously bounce over the other two before settling on yours.

"What did I say about detours, hmm?" Despite her stern tone and steely stare you can see relief settle into her face as her jaw relaxes and eyebrows soften. You let Sam and Hina enter into the back.

"Yeah, sorry." You nervously smile as you calm in her protective presence. Until the piercing scream of a girl fills your ears. A girl you know and want to get closer to. You snap onto the source of the scream, the scene twists your heart and sends adrenaline throughout your whole body.

Heather is pinned by one of the infected.
