Wait for payment - on the way home

"Well, geez..." you say. You didn't really plan to buy anything at first, so you have maybe a quarter or two in your pockets. But the young woman waves at you and assure you it is no problem at all. "But make sure to give me what I request when the time of payment is at hand..." she says. A strange light flickers in her eyes; you thank her awkwardly and step outside.

Though the book is quite big, it is exceptionnally light. On the way home, you can't bring yourself to drag your eyes away from the mysterious cover. As you step on your house porch, you pause for a second and open the book. Magically, the first page is turned. Then the second one. And the third one. Faster and faster, the pages flip in front of your bewildered eyes.

The flapping sound comes to an abrupt end when the book settles on page 143. On it is written:

"Don't go the obvious way if you can't face..."

If you can't face...? The obvious way...? What kind of nonsense is this?!
