Chapter 7 by Purveyor_of_Sin Purveyor_of_Sin

How will he go about doing so?

Visit Joseph Hunter's Widow

After doing some research, Daniel was learned that the Joseph Hunter from the drivers license found in Edward Jewel's possession was long dead. He had vanished, and presumed dead, more than ten years ago when he vanished while sailing through the Bermuda Triangle. This made Daniel frown. If that was the case, then how did a deranged homeless veteran get his items in his possession?

The detective dug a bit deeper and was able to discover that Hunter's family still lived in the area. He got the widow's contact information from the DMV records, but unfortunately no one was answering on the provided number. He tried a few more times over the next two hours, but the phone just continued to ring. Eventually he decided to pay a personal visit to the wife, hoping for answers to this bizarre case.

Daniel decided to take the box with Jewel's belongings along with him. If he was right, then the items were extremely dangerous and needed to be watched. The paperclip, rubber band, and the plane ticket each showed bizarre abilities; who knew what the other things could do?

He quickly made his way out of the station house and to the parking lot. In his spot was Jim's old, banged up sports car. No one really knew what to do with it, as Jim had no family. Daniel didn't have a car of his own, so he had been using the vehicle to get around. He knew he was probably violating all manner of laws by keeping the thing, but he figured he was still somewhat in shock and trying to hang onto his friend in any way possible.

Daniel opened the driver's side door and hopped in, placing the evidence box with the items on the passenger's seat next to him. He kept the paperclip and rubber band on his person, as he knew they were extremely dangerous and should not be let out of his sight.

Traffic was light during his drive, but unfortunately he wasn't familiar with the area. Pretty soon he realized that he was lost. Jim also didn't own a GPS device as the older man felt he didn't need one; he had lived in Miami all his life and liked to brag that he knew every street and alley in the city. Daniel popped open the glove compartment, hoping to at least find a map, but all that was in there were bags of half-eaten chips and empty soda cans.

The detective shook his head in irritation, but then remembered that among Jewel's possessions was an old map of Miami. Daniel dug through the box next to him and eventually found the tattered, ink-faded map. He stopped at a street corner and unfolded the paper, wondering if the old thing was still any good. He thought about his destination, the widow's address focused in his mind, and began looking for the street. It was then that something strange happened.

A red circle, the mark looking like someone had just drawn it using a red magic marker, suddenly appeared on the map. If Daniel hadn't seen much stranger things in the past few days, he would have probably been freaking out. The detective checked the map, seeing that the circled area was near the street corner where he had parked.

"Well I'll be damned," he muttered. He then tried something else. Thinking of his home address, he looked down at the map. Sure enough, the old red circle vanished to be replaced by a new one, this one appearing over the spot where his apartment building was.

The young detective smiled. Looks like he figured out what the map's ability was. Sadly, it didn't seem very impressive, not like the others. Sure it was weird, but a GPS could pretty much do the same thing. He shook his head, then stuffed the map back into the evidence box before starting the engine.

He drove to the spot that the map had circled, and sure enough, it was definitely the address for Joseph Hunter's family. It was a nice enough looking house, perfectly ordinary in that it wasn't an ostentatious mansion nor a crumbling ghetto slum hole. Despite this, Daniel felt that he had to be careful. Whatever was going on here, it was obviously supernatural. He had to approach everything he met with a cautious eye, else it could kill him when he least expected it.

Daniel pulled the rubber band from his pocket and with a resigned sigh, wrapped it around his wrist. He felt a bit disgusted; after all, that maniac Jewel had used this thing, along with the paperclip, to kill thirty eight people. He quickly reasoned that the rubber band was an inanimate object, a thing. It was Jewel who killed those people, not the thing. Would he blame the gun used to shoot someone during a robbery? No, he would be arresting the scumbag who used it.

Steeling his resolve, Daniel exited the car. He then walked up calmly towards the front door and rung the bell. Hopefully the widow or her son would be home, and they could answer his questions. Because if they couldn't, then he had no idea how to follow up on these strange items.

Who answers the door?
