Unsettling. Quickly give Jane the jeep

The disparity of power between you, for a moment, feels suddenly striking. Gult hits you like a truck. Yanking Jane’s chain like this, you realize, isn’t right. You’re toying with her emotions. Like a billionaire waving a thousand dollars in a homeless person’s face to throw themselves into a lake.

"Okay, okay!" you say uncomfortably, laughing and raising your hands in surrender. "It's yours, all right? It's my jeep now, and I'm giving it to you. It's yours, Jane."

It’s as if Jane’s been struck by lightning. For a second she freezes, staring at you with wide eyes. Then, suddenly, the runner lets go of the jeep and lunges at you.

"Woah wait -" you say, flinching fearfully away.

Jane collides into you and seizes you with the fiercest hug you've ever been given. Your arms are pinned. You can barely breathe - her arms bind you like bands of steel. Yet at the same time, Jane's wiry body is slight against yours, and she smells nice. There's the mineral scent to her sweat and skin, and then there's a touch of a teak wood fragrance in her hair. Her shampoo, maybe?

Nobody’s ever hugged you like this before.

"Thank you Chase," Jane chokes out, nearly dragging you to the ground with her unsupported mass. "Thank you so much."

You stagger to accommodate your friend, prepared neither for her body weight or her sudden breakdown. You didn’t even know Jane had feelings before now. "Uh, you're welcome," you eke out. "I said I'd help you yesterday. I meant it."

Jane gives you one last bone crushing squeeze, burying her head briefly in the crook of your shoulder before jerking away. She wipes her face on her forearm and sniffs loudly. Her voice is thick when she speaks. "Nobody ever did anything like this for me before.”

You demure, feeling incredibly awkward. "Nobody else can claim anything they want by just saying so."

"Nobody's ever been as nice to me either," says Jane, not really listening to you and still sort of crying. "I know it's easy for you cause your powers, but you made a promise and you kept it. Dad always says he'll do stuff for me and then he can't because he's too busy with work, or because of money, or..."

Understanding dawns on you. You think you can fill in the blanks. "Your dad says he’ll do stuff for you like... buying a car.”

Jane wipes her face again. "I-If you ever need a ride anywhere or anything, you'll tell me, right? I'll take you anywhere you want to go."

"Right," you say, unable to give her any other answer. You were just throwing your magic powers around, you didn’t mean to blunder into any deep-seated family issues your sporty friend has with her dad. "Let's ah… go check that us stealing - er - claiming this jeep won’t hurt anyone too bad. Yeah?"

Jane sniffs, and nods, then follows you into the nearest building to start enquiring after the prior owner of the yellow vehicle.
